Yes, it's possible to use most Wind & Mobi AWS phones on SpeakOut since in addition to AWS 1700/2100 Mhz 3G, the phones also support 850/1900 Mhz at 2G Edge speeds, which is what SpeakOut uses.
You need to unlock the phone first, of course, but Wind will give you the unlock code free after 3 months of service.
And don't forget to set your phone to "2G Only" to save your battery.
This is very convenient for low volume users since the SIM cards are now available for $10 at any 7-Eleven store, on-line top-ups are now possible with a $25 minimum, and their 365-day expiry is the longest currently available in Canada.

I think that Speakout is stepping away from the Handset market and moving into the SIM only format because they can't make any money with the non smartphone handsets.
It would be great to see them taking the money they save by not selling subsidized handsets and moving that into some sort of Data plan.
I'd love to see a paygo talk&text/$10data plan (not just browsing). Cap it at a reasonable data rate and I'd gladly sign up for a monthly plan.
Mobilicity now has a $25 unlimited text/talk/data plan.
I don't think that it's much of a stretch to have a $10/mo data plan, but for that price, I would expect the ability to have some sort of limited tethering associated with it.
What would be even better is a paygo data plan. $10 for 200mb of data would be more than fair. I have more than enough access to regular wifi, but when travelling by car it would be nice to be able to check email on the fly.
For the maps portion, I'd get a nokia. Free Voice direction GPS for car or walking. Plus as good as apple is, I hate the itunes interface.
