Why won't brand new EVO sleep?

About a month ago I bought a new EVO 3D (gingerbread 2.3.4) but it will never sleep, even after I went into recovery mode and wiped all data to go back to factory settings.

The up time is always equal to the awake time, and the awake time continues to acrue even when the phone has been "powered off" with the fastboot option checked (which I thought is supposed to suspend it)

The fact that the phone never sleeps is my only initial indication of a problem, but my problems intensify after installing about 40 of my favorite apps when the phone starts spontaneously rebooting several times a day, and eventually gets to a point where every app gives an error that it stopped unexpectedly (force close) including system processes like Google Services Framework (process com.google.android.apps.gapps)

My question is: why wouldn't an EVO 3D (reset to factory settings) go to sleep? Would that problem point to a software or a hardware problem? Do I need to exchange this phone?

If you do a factory reset and don't add any apps. Will the phone sleep?
It sounds like you have an app conflicting with the phone OS somewhere.

I can tell you how I would fix it, but need to know if the phone will sleep with it's factory install and no additional apps.

    Thanks for the reply.

I had previously rooted the phone in an attempt to fix the repeating force-close problem (following http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-ha...-unlock-method ) but

TODAY when the forced-close problem repeated, I went into some kind of recovery mode (by rebooting while holding vol down), selecting "recovery" which took me to a black screen titled "Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4) and I selected "wipe data/factory reset".

Then after rebooting into an apparently freshly restored system and installing nothing, the wake time still equals the up time no matter what I do including suspending it. However, the system is still "rooted".

I have no real need for this to be rooted, I just want it to sleep. Maybe the way I did the "factory reset" (from the link above for rooting it) was to blame? How can I get the appropriate factory settings to enable it to sleep?

Well since the phone is rooted I don't know if it will work properly, but normally you go to settings (and this is on my HTC Aria, so it may or may not be the same on your phone) >Privacy>Factory Data Reset.
This will probably do the same as what you did, but it is worth a try. I have read that HTC phones are a bugger to root properly or to install new ROMs on because of how they are locked down.
Is that true? Your guess is as good as mine.

I did the factory reset in the way you described. Then after rebooting the phone, I unchecked the checkboxes (like allow HTC to collect data) in the mandatory setup wizard.

Even then (without installing anything), it won't sleep (up=awake time), but appears to be fine otherwise, but after leaving it on a few hours it goes into a cycyle where it constantly reboots itself until I pull the battery.

Could rooting it have introduced a problem like this? (although it did it this before I rooted it but I had suspected the cause to be an app I'd installed).

Would it be a good idea to install another rom? I wouldn't know what rom to install.

There, you are getting out of my league.
It may be possible, I don't know. Did it do this right from the start?
Did you buy it from Sprint? I think Sprint is the only carrier that has the EVO line up.
Had it been me I would have returned the phone for a replacement ASAP, but since the phone is rooted that is out of the question.
I would try to find a copy of the factory ROM and reinstall it on to the phone. This may correct what ever the problem is, then again it may be a bad hardware issue.

Try this first though. Fast boot should be turned off/unchecked. (any time something is checked/normally a green check means it is on, so be sure the check is gray) With it on it keeps the phone active all the time but at a minimal setting, much like when your PC goes in to hibernation, Hibernation and sleep mode are different. Sleep mode would be like when the screen shuts off and you have to move the mouse or tap a key to wake the screen back up etc. Hibernation actually puts the PC in to a very low power use mode, almost off but not quite.
Fast boot is the same as hibernation. It keeps the phone from powering down all the way when you shut it off so that when you turn it on/wake it up it just powers up the saved settings in ram rather than starting fresh from the system memory/SSD/Harddrive.

Turn the Fast boot off, take any SD cards out of the phone, with the phone on pull the battery and leave it out for about 5 min, ram should clear in less than 30 seconds but better safe than sorry, (reason for this is, when the phone shuts off it will try to save current setting before it shuts off. If any of those settings are corrupt it will save them for the next reboot and load up corrupt the next time you start the phone. Pulling the battery kills power to ram and any corrupt setting will be lost) do another factory reset like you did here

TODAY when the forced-close problem repeated, I went into some kind of recovery mode (by rebooting while holding vol down), selecting "recovery" which took me to a black screen titled "Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4) and I selected "wipe data/factory reset".
Leave fast boot off. What may be happening here is that since the phone is never shutting off, the ram is being consumed by system processes and the 40 apps that may be running in the back ground. The phone may be having a nervous brake down.

    Now recheck the phone.

I believe your problem may be solved after this, If it is do this. Add Android Assistant to the apps you have, go through the settings and set it to quick boost every 30 min, Also I believe there is a setting in AA that allows you to pick what apps you have added to the phone to load up when the phone starts. Go through that list and shut everything that is not absolutely necessary off. All those apps starting up will slow the phone down and may be causing some kind of conflict in the end. Then add AppMonster and back up all the apps you add to the phone in case this happens again they will all be saved to your SD card. Add app2SD app to move what apps you can from the phone memory over to the SD card, just remember that any apps that have been moved over to the SD card will not work if you remove the SD card. So be sure after you do all this that the SD card is in the phone at all times.
Also you should probably install GO Contacts app, this will allow you to back up all your contact information to your SD card, this way if you have problems in the future and need to do a factory restore again, you can just remove your SD card, do the restore, reinstall GO Contacts and App Monster, then import all your contacts and apps back on to your phone from the SD card rather than going through the market and downloading everything again.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I've done all that. I powered off and did the full factory reset including erasing the SD card. I've concluded that either a hardware problem (bad ram?) or I will need to load a different rom image, which I know nothing about yet. My dealer told me to try to load an "ruu" as the original rom that came on the unit, but I suppose I can load other roms too, to see if that works. If nothing works then I assume some kind of hardware problem.

By the way, you said that turning off with fastboot enabled should make it hibernate. I expected the same thing, however when I turn it off (with fastboot enabled), it continues running as can be verified if I turn it on 10 mins later, the up time and awake time have both been incremented by 10 minutes.

Furthermore, if I leave it off all night (when it's supposedly hibernating) the next morning, then at some point it reboots and I discover it ON in the morning (one quick push of the power button brings up the lock screen). But every time I discover it rebooting (since I can hear the haptic vibration notification), it continues to reboot until I pull the battery.

The question is: Will flashing a new rom fix this or do I need to send it back and hope they will replace the unit?

I think your EVO is on Crack/Cocaine. LOL

Turning off fast boot is disabling it not enabling it. I think you are turning fast boot on, not the other way around.

Try to get the original ROM that came on the phone. Install it. It should be the factory HTC OS ROM. Once installed, take it back for replacement.
It is what I would do were I in your shoes.
