You can, you just have to get it on their line, then swap it to yours. I've done it before.

Thought I'd heard of this done on other carriers, but wanted to see if anyone here had any useful input.
I'm on a family plan with 3 others (not a Belief Plan). We've all upgraded/re-signed contracts at separate times. If another person on my plan is due for an upgrade (I am not) but doesn't want to use it, can the upgrade be used to get a new phone and then have the phone number switched to mine?
Any input is appreciated!

Yes, just tell them you want to do an ESN swap. They might call it an MEID swap now, but same idea. When I do this it does not seem to disrupt the other line or if it does it is only for a minute or so.
I use mine and my daughters upgrade, so every year I get a new toy. She is hard on phones, so I always buy used phones for her. Tonight she dropped her Acclaim and the screen doesn't work, so back to the Messager for her.
PS. ESN swaps have caused me problems during rebates, but a call CS takes care of that issue.
Motorola Electrify (Stock..for now)
HTC Desire rooted with Oxygen ROM
HTC Touch Pro 2 US Cellular with MightyROM and Android as optional boot
Make sure they activate it temporarily on the line that's renewing, and, most importantly, make sure you put *that* line's info on the rebate form, and you shouldn't have any problems.
