I have always been able to tether with my Nexus One. Then on Oct 21 it quit working and data on my phone quit working too. So I called customer care and was advised my data plan is for a blackberry & not a Nexus One and effective immediately I would have no more data (unless I put my sim in a blackberry). Sad day.

For all legacy data plan users:

    Switch your APN to Internet2.voicestream.com

    Then your internet/data/tethering will work.

Over on xda the att sgs2 forum is having problems with built in tetherig. Even rooted or stock. They think it may be a bug in Samsung so try wireless tether from the market

None of my users on my T-Mobile business account(s) have gotten the upsell notice. Many continue to tether over 2GB per month.

do they all use the newest phones like the SG2 or Amaze 4G that have had problems with getting the upsell message?

Yeah seems like the Amaze and SG II have it blocked on a phone-based level.

Not yet good point. I'm getting some GS2's soon so I'll test and report back.

As a FYI all of our data plans for smartphones are "unlimited," w/o throttling not 2GB, 5GB and 10GB "no overage," like they offer consumers on newer plans.

Yes and if you freeze the Tethering enabling app, tethering manager or something like that you can tether freely

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.

Wirelessly posted (Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_3; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0 Safari/533.16)

I read that "tether manager" blocks that in S2.
Root the phone and move the app in /system/app to SD card and see.

I just recently started seeing the Hotspot upsell on my old Flexpay plan. Tethered through an iPhone or TM506, i get the upsell page while using IE, Chrome, or Firefox. All other traffic seems unaffected. They also reinstated the 5GB cap (2004 termed account) and removed all cellular data roaming. I guess they are asking for trouble again.

My grandfathered Total Internet package doesn't get the upsell page... yet.

You should be able to use Firefox or Chrome with the User Agent Switcher and get no upsell.

I Googled a bit and it seemed like most people are able to tether as long as it wasn't excessive - did this recently change?

I rarely tether and I don't need it to be a WiFi hotspot, so I guess I'll have to go the EasyTether route.. But I was just curious. Both phones are on the $20 preferred Android data plan.
I think it is something with samsung phones, I was in the T-Mobile store and turned on tethering and it direct the phone to a up sell page. On my iPhone and Mytouch 4G slide I have no issue.
