I was having all sorts of trouble with getting the sync to start or if it started, to complete successfully when I did my ipad (the iphone didn't have any trouble). I finally solved it by creating a new user (windows 7) and running itunes from there. I was able to get the ipad to update and restore settings just fine. Only major annoyances for both devices was having to manually re-fetch hundreds of apps one at a time off the 'cloud' again. Also lost all music and books that was on the devices and had to reload that as well. Fortunately the settings and data for the other apps was still there even though the apps weren't, and once the apps were reinstalled they were as they had been before.
