I need some advice here and I hope some of you can help me out from your opinions. I will most likely be adding a Sprint phone very soon. I'm going to be keeping my Verizon account so I'm not looking for the best phone nor do I want to spend that much on a phone. I'm looking for a smartphone though and I'd like to stay in a price range of around $50 but I'm willing to go as high as $100 if need be. Keep in mind my house is located in a Sprint weak spot so it's very important I get a phone known to pick up a signal well. 4G isn't really important to me as WiMax is not in my area or even anywhere CLOSE to it.
On the cheaper end I'm looking at the LG Optimus S to start out with. I've read mostly good things about it at the price point but I'm not sure how well it picks up as I haven't read anything about the RF on this phone. I had looked at the Nexus S but I've read quite a few posts from people saying it has poor RF quality so I've pretty much at this point nixed this phone. I've had my eye on the Blackberry Curve 9350 a little but I'm not the biggest fan of the Blackberry OS or its limited app market but its inexpensive and Blackberry's while not the best seem to be decent.
On my higher end price range I've narrowed it down to the HTC EVO and the LG Marquee. I've played with the EVO and I love the big bright screen and the phone seems fast and responsive. I've heard mostly positive things about the phone and I myself like it pretty well although the phone is a bit large for me but I can deal with that. I have yet to play with an LG Marquee but I do like the looks and size of it and what little reviews I have found online of it have been good but I've yet to see any real user reviews of it.
Hopefully with some user inputs from you all I can decide what to get. Thanks!!!
I had an EVO for a year before I ran off to Verizon for a TB w/unlimited LTE. I used the EVO in both wimax and non-wimax markets. It's one of the best phones that I've ever owned. It does have the typical android battery life... but much better battery life than my HTC TB. And for whatever reason, the user interface on the EVO is much better than on the TB. Actually compared to most of the other smart phones I've had, including BB, the EVO was far superior. It's a bit dated now of course, but still a solid performing phone.
I'm highly tempted by the EVO although $100 is at the high end of my price range. I honestly was gonna get the Nexus S until I started hearing how crappy the signal was on it. Basically what I need this for is just a second line. Mostly for texting, talking, facebook, some light web use, Pandora, and a little GPS. Thats pretty much it. What I value most I'd say in this line is an inexpensive phone with good signal and battery life. Sure I'd like a cool phone and I'm a bit of a tech head but I don't have to have the best by any means for this line.
Sounds like a Motorola XPRT may be a phone to check into. Motos are often praised for RF quality, the phone is $100 and is rather basic but should accomplish everything you have listed.
Good battery life - check
Android - check (2.2)
- Supports light web use, Pandora and a little GPS
RF quality - check
I saw the XPRT but since its the same price as the EVO and marquee I dismissed it. It seems like less of a phone but yet is at the same price point. In regards to the iPhone I don't wan't two of them but I cant get the iPhone anyways. The iPhone and Samsung Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy 2) are unavailable to me.

Well after reading a little about this device I am considering it. I'm not the biggest fan of the blackberry curve like layout but I've been reading the device picks up well and has good battery life. So I will be considering this model now. Thanks for the suggestion!
Like VDubb pointed out the iPhone4 is 100.00 and has a great battery life.
I have an EVO and the battery life was pathetic until I flashed it with CM7. I acutally can't believe the difference.
I also have the Nexus S and have no issues with cellular RF. None.
Battery life sucks but I'll be flashing that too.
Wi-Fi signal is a different story.

Sent from my EVO running CM7
I'm aware the iPhone is only $100 but the system I'm ordering from will not have the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy 2 as phone options. I've heard the EVO can have poor battery life. How is the RF on the EVO though? I haven't really heard anything on how well the phone performs signal wise.

What kind of system is that?
The EVO has a good signal or should I say I have never had an issue. I has not failed me where I know I should have service.
It's a good phone and still competes with the higher tiered models even though it's had a birthday.
We all do things different but I would be tempted to take the free Nexus S and if you really didn't like it hop on Craigslist for an EVO. A used EVO is not doing that much money anymore and I suspect the prices will fall on used phones due to everyone caught up in the iPhone hysteria.
I have an Optimus S on Virgin and that gets a good signal also. Depending on your needs, that may be a no contract option.
Just wanted to say thanks for the input. I'm actually going to be able to order my Sprint line tomorrow and based on my own personal tastes and from what I've heard I have decided to go with the HTC EVO 4G.
Good choice and probably the best overall pick among the ones you had available.
I hope I enjoy it, I ordered my EVO today. According to Sprint I should receive it in 3-5 days. So I'm hoping to have it sometime Friday or by Saturday at the most. So I can play with my new "toy" heh.
