Duty or tax to buy a phone on ebay from US to Canada?

    Hi there,

Someone with experience can probably share this knowledge..

Will there be any duty OR tax OR both if I buy a phone from a US ebay'er?

Thanks very much for any answer.

    Yes and no
If it marked gift and $5-10 value and shipped vis usps-canada post - it will be no tax.

    Overwise $5 brokerage + 13% for ontario

    Ups For $300 item $50(approximately) brokerage + $39 hst

Fedex same as ups, but they will send you bill later - no proplem to through it out, I do it twice, they have no rights to report to collection, they don't have any agreements with you.

If you live close to border, like in toronto, go to states and open po box, save a lot

Canada customs 100% trust for value if package sent from private person. Cause its hard to determine value in most cases.

Fedex and ups requre invoice from shipper and trust it for 100%

Thank you guys very much for the detailed answer.

I think now the question becomes, say if the sellers ships via USPS, and claim it as gift with a $50 value while the phone was sold for $500, how does Canada Customs determine its real value? Do they take what you claim or do they scan/open the box and forcefully put a price on it?

Customs can open box, but 99% they trust value. They can xray box first. Why mark it $50? Mark it $5, commertial sample.

    Or gift, phone for parts.

Best option for you - warranty replacement. I am not sure, but it should be tax free
