Ran this one at work in Laughlin, which is pretty close to a cell site....always much better than at home on the AZ side of the river (2.5D/.25U). The ping is bad because for some reason, the test went though Vegas instead of our local host.
Switch the server in settings to the Mexicali one. You'll see a substantial decrease in ping if it's anything like it does here in Las Vegas.
My speed tests do the same thing for the upload, work for like 1/2 of the test then just drop off to nothing... What gives??
I see the same type thing sometimes. But when I try to use data and I have never had n e problems using any app. Just to me seems to only happen when doing the speed test. Could be something Wrong with that app. No matter what speeds I do get its always better than I got on Vzw AT&T network to me is so much better now than it was 5 yrs ago.
Try the Towerstream server in Chicago, IL. I get good speeds from that. Remember the AT&T ST stuff is routed through a proxy and so you typically won't get the best results with a server closest to you unless your in the middle of the east coast.
Thats taken literally under a DAS and its lunch time, so that's very good.

any truth to the idea that straight talk blocks speedtest servers ? I have some speed test where I get no download, and others where I get 7 or 8 mb/s in the same location

Remove the Proxy field in your APN. (Not MMS Proxy, just "Proxy")
