Here's what the press release from AT&T said about the phone:
The AT&T Avail from ZTE is the second Android smartphone launched by GoPhone, AT&T’s pre-paid offering. This device features a 3.5-inch touch screen, 5- megapixel camera and runs on Android 2.3 OS. AT&T Avail provides an affordable option for customers seeking the Android smartphone experience while still maintaining control of their usage and monthly bill.
Looking at the specs, I'm curious why this phone is cheaper than the LG Thrive. It has a larger screen, better camera, is running 2.3 Gingerbread while the Thrive is still on Froyo, has more internal memory (LG Thrive has like 160 MB) etc....
Someone needs to get the phone and write a review!
It's less because it's a ZTE, and not an LG There's definitely the name and advertising thing going on.
Expect worse build quality and screen, for example, though they may be comparable. I have one of those $14 ZTE F160s and with a 900mAh battery...in a dumbphone...it only manages 3 hours of talk time. Yeah, quite a difference between the Avail and the F160, but consider why ZTEs are always cheaper
The definition of irony...

I bought the avail. Its not a bad phone. Very light weight. Good screen colors. Could use better responsiveness, mistypes alot. Gingerbread. Good snappy speeds. Id say worth the price. Not as great as thrive though.
The battery life is 5 hours of activity period. Pathetic. Sure it's 200 if it's just sittin there,,, but if your running games or just talking or ANYTHING,,, U got 5 hours... so pack a rapid charger and have a diesel generator in-tow
Welcome, cobbweb.
Start by turning off the GPS. From the homescreen, press the MENU button, select Settings --> Location & Security, then uncheck Use GPS. You can always come back to this screen to turn GPS on when you actually need it. You can also add a power management widget to the homescreen with a GPS toggle button.
With GPS off, the battery life is still far from desirable but at least it isn't that atrocious.
Hey guys, I have a problem/concern, maybe someone could help... I purchased the very cheapest GoPhone at wal mart ( for $15 ) so that I could get my number ported over to AT&t while I was deciding which smartphone I really wanted.I finally decided just to get an Avail later this week, BUT ....I have made a couple calls on this $15 phone and the sound is horrendous, i can barely hear the other person and theres lots of "whooshing" noise. Coverage here for att is excellent, always full bars. Is the call quality horrendous because of this super cheap phone, or is it AT&T??!
If anyone could offer some insight, I'd appreciate it!!
AT&T does not downgrade the voice quality on their prepaid service. You should have good voice quality as long as you have good coverage and a decent 3G phone. I emphasize on the "3G" portion because most if not all of the cheap phones for GoPhone are 2G-only. Unfortunately AT&T is notorious for using a crappy audio codec in their 2G network which produces awful-sounding calls in almost all 2G phones.
Yeah 3G call quality on prepaid sounds the same as postpaid(at least to me) and the 3G phones seem much better than the 2g phones in terms of call quality.
I bough a cheap Samsung a107 as a backup and the call quality was mediocre at best.
