    From the user manual:

    Global Phone
When you’re travelling abroad, you can use a SIM card to let your phone access a
mobile network in the country you’re in.
    Inserting the SIM card
Your phone is set to CDMA mode by default. If you install a SIM card, your phone
automatically switches to Global mode, which lets you use GSM networks outside of
    the United States.
SIM cards must be purchased from a carrier in the country you wish to use the
phone and are not sold or supported by your service provider.

Well had a Hero in my house today, reception the same as the Desire I had, -92dBa. Dropped a call
My Electrify is at -80dBa never a dropped call.

No way in heck is the reception comparable between the 2.
MOTOROLA Still #1 in reception and call clarity.

The hero S has a dead spot on the antenna somewhat like the first iPhone 4's did. It's in the bottom right on the back. If you don't put your hand directly over it the signal is WAY better.

There must be difference in the network in your area. I did a comparison if the Desire, Electrify and Hero S at the USCC store and found all to be at -90dBm. There was an Electrify that was in a different spot and it was at -83dBm and my Desire was at -85dBm so they seemed very close.

I did a test of my Desire in my basement where many phones lose signal from all carriers. My Desire was bouncing between -102dBm and -105dBm and was able to make a call without issue. I moved to find the worst spot and got as low at -118dBm without dropping the call, although it was cutting out.

When I have a chance I will try and make test calls with the Electrify and Hero S in our Kohl's. Kohl's is the only place I have lost signal, but I cant remember if I was on the TP2 or the Desire. Also, if able I can test at our County Jail facility. Only Verizon customers get reception in the conference room there and if the Electrify could get a signal there it would be worth it for me to have signal when I am in a training or working on our DR equipment in the server room.
    Motorola Electrify (Stock..for now)
HTC Desire rooted with Oxygen ROM
HTC Touch Pro 2 US Cellular with MightyROM and Android as optional boot

Has anyone tried any temp or perm rooting to their hero s? I would like to get it, but would like to know if any method have had any success at all? I would do it myself, but I'm not able to get the phone yet.

i've messed around with a few root methods that worked on my evo shift but i wasn't able to get temp root. i'm not an adk genius/ dev though. i'm assuming we'll have to downgrade the bootloader in order to flash an engineering spl or whatever it is, so it might be a while before it happens. i'd like root even if there's no custom roms, just so i can remove some of this annoying crap like city ID and the zappos app etc.

looks like sprint's htc evo design is getting ICS so the hero-s should be getting it too since they're almost identical. "early 2012" isn't that far away, this is exciting!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah i agree that a downgrade of the bootloader is going to be required to root. As long as a temp root can be found, bloatware can be removed. No custom roms w/o full root though. If I recall I have seen people running the oxygen rom with s-on (gsm htc desire). Not 100% sure about that w/o looking into that more.

Do you mind sharing the links of what you tried with root for your hero s, that worked for your evo shift? No problem if you don't Thanks.

EDIT: I did email HTC about the unlock bootloaders (for the design/hero s via htcdev.com, but they replied with a: "Unfortunately we do not have any info if/when any more HTC devices bootloader will be unlocked Please keep up with further info on htcdev.com".

Not to damper your excitement, but it's also up to the carrier if they want to push ICS to the hero s. For example, Sprint/HTC has pushed an update for the htc loggers on the HTC design 4G, but we (us cellular/hero s) haven't seen such an update (unless someone can tell me different). I hope us cellular/htc follows suit in releasing the update for ICS & the patch htc loggers for the hero s.

i tried using visionary for temp root ( as instructed in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932153 )and another root method i found on XDA, it was some generic root process that seems to work well on samsung phones and a few HTCs. i can't find the page right now so i can't link to it, but it's the one where it says "sending 149 zerglings". it gets most of the way through, but of course since the phone is s-on it can't write the final things that it needs to and fails. visionary just didn't work for me, i tried it 3x and nothing. i haven't tried Z4 yet, i'm assuming it'll fail as well. when i was able to get temp root on my shift i could remove bloatware but it returned on reboot since it wasn't perm root, but it's better than nothing! i know that when i got GB on my shift they also updated the bootloader and it took a while for root to happen on 2.3- i had rooted and was running cm7 perfectly fine, but i had issues with my phone so i RUUed back to stock and still had issues (turns out it was just horrible sprint reception in my area), so i had to wait 2 months or so before someone figured out how to root stock 2.3 by reverting to an older bootloader.
i might email HTC again tomorrow and see if they can give me an estimate on when they'll have their bootloader unlock available for the hero-s, it seems they've stopped updating the list of phones that have the unlock. i actually tried going through their unlock process and they emailed me the final part of it, but the phone didn't take it

oh i know it's up to USCC, but i'd think they'll at least give us 1 update for the hero-s. when i swapped my electrify for my hero-s i asked the sales guy if it'd get ICS and he said yes, it will get the "newest android coming out in a few months" so i'm assuming he means ICS (unless he meant jellybean! hahaha). i left USCC for sprint last february/march so i'm new to android on USCC, i had no clue we don't have OTA software updates (my electrify did though). i really hope we get the patch too!

Possible root. Tried on the evo design 4g. Hopefully it works for the hero s. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1343114
