I recently bought a Sharp sh01a over the internet, from someone on this forum actually. It arrived today.
I charged it, etc, inserted my sim card properly adjusted w/ the hypersim. It seemed to work; it accepted all my contacts (though they're out of order--dunno why but it doesn't matter much) and everything is fine except for one thing: There's no service.
I don't know if it's just my area or my house or what. I've always only had spotty reception in my room at best, which was where i first tried out the phone. But usually i have reception in my house or at least out on the street. However, nothing was available. I fooled around with all the settings i could find but nothing happened.
I'm not the most tech-savvy person, so i think there might be something that i'm missing here. The message that it's giving me is "out of service area". I have AT&T, with unlimited talk&text. I live in Irvine, California, and most places i've checked say that there should be pretty good service for the 1900 MHz band right where my house is. I know that's a lie, but does that mean that it's just my house and it'll work fine at places where there's actually good service?
Please, any advice you can give me would help a ton. Actually, if you're quite sure that it's entirely my fault for buying a foreign phone without guessing that this would happen, please put forth that opinion as well but if you please, back it up with proof that there isn't anything i'm forgetting to do because i don't want to just give up without final proof that it wouldn't ever work.
If there is a carrier on which it would work pretty much for sure, please let me know what it is, just because i'm curious. But mainly I"m looking for solutions rather than alternatives.
Well for starters, make sure your sim card is working. Put the sim card in a phone that is known to work (ex. the phone you got from AT&T). If it works, move on. If not, its your sim card.
Now that your sim card is known to work. Place the hypersim + your simcard on the phone that you got from AT&T. It should pick up a signal. If not, there is a possibility your hypersim doesnt support your sim or it is messed up. If you get a signal, make 1 or two calls. Any number could work (customer care, your voicemail, your house phone etc) as long as you make a connection. If it works move on. Again if you didnt get a signal, check your hypersim.
Now take the hypersim off the phone and put it into your SH01A. Once you turn it on, it should pick up service. If you see bars, make calls to make sure it works. If you dont see bars, check in your settings and make sure its not on 3G mode. Choose GSM if possible. I dont have that specific phone but im sure someone else can help you in changing that setting. If you still have no service, then recheck all the steps above.
Thats pretty much all I can say. This is based on my experiences with my keitais (P905i, P01A and SBM003SH)
have you used a 1900 only phone before? if not it is sort of risky, and probably your area runs both 850 and 1900 gsm. chances are if you were getting good reception you were on either 3g or 2g 850
