sorry to hear that some of you are still experiencing issues with the battery. it's one of the reasons i haven't bought a new iphone to replace my 3gs. i did upgrade to the latest OS and have noticed faster battery drain. however i'm on a phone that's two and a half years old still with the original battery. so i'm sure the age of the battery is a contributing factor.
Something similar happens to me, but I think I was able to figure out what is going on. I work at a remote area during the week, and cell phone signal is weak. I always leave my iPhone 4 S plugged at night, and when I sleep at the remote area sometimes the battery is less than 100% during the morning, even though the phone was plugged all night. When I sleep at home, this never happens and my iPhone's battery is at 100% in the morning. So, I am guessing that at least in my case the culprit might be that the phone is using a lot of power just to stay connected to the network.
Mine does this frequently while being charged overnight in an area with excellent cellular coverage. I'll plug it in before going to bed, and then 8 hours later when I wake up, the battery icon shows the plug (which means it's fully charged). But the percentage is at 92-94%. And on the days when that happens, the battery drains extremely fast after I unplug it. On the days that I wake up and find it at 100%, the drain is minimal throughout the day.
make sure all your apps are not running at the same time.
it's also about training your battery. don't charge your phone again if it's at 50%, wait till about 18%.
little things like this matter.
i can go 3 days at least without charging my phone (to me that's a big deal).
i've had phones where I had to charge at least twice a day, but this was before I realized how important it is to TRAIN your battery from the day of purchase.
hope this helps you with future battery related purchases!!

I know all of that and do all of that - always have with every phone - but it hasn't made a bit of difference with this particular issue on my 4S.
Just had this happen this morning. Plugged in all night charges to 100% and in the morning unplugged had 96%. 5 bars on 3G. My apps were cleared clean.
Once the charger hits 100%, it stops charging the battery. The charger will go with a lower current to help power the phone, but certain things will draw additional energy from the battery. The charger won't kick back in again unless the battery drops into the low 90s.
It's not a defect, warranty isn't going to help you. That's just how it is. Even my 4 and the 3GS I had before that did this from time to time.
If you are having these problems, book a genius appointment and go to the apple store. This behavior is not normal for the iPhone. There isn't much you can do other then half apple look at it. I've heard from several apple employees that the 4s has more glitches then the iPhone 4. You all should be under warranty, go to apple and they will fix your issue or give you another phone that is issue free.
I realized mine does this too, but only if I charged my battery when it was not near empty (say I plug it in at work when it has 40% battery left). For the past few days I let my battery drain until the phone shut itself off, plugged it in overnight and the next morning it was at 100%.
The way it should work is the phone charges to 100% and then STOPS charging. This prolongs the overall battery life. Less cycles = battery will last longer (not per charge, per lifetime)
So if your phone when plugged in to the Apple charger that was included with the phone discharges from 100% to anything below 99% in a period of a few hours there is something wrong with the battery in the phone. If you are using an aftermarket charger, try the original iPhone or iPad charger.

That appears to be exactly what's happening. It charges to 100% and then it stops charging. Since the phone is still on and connected to the cell network, the charge level starts to drop, and it doesn't start charging again until it's unplugged and then plugged back in.

I only use the original cable and charger supplied by Apple with the iPhone when charging overnight. Over an 8-10 hour period, it charges and then will sometimes discharge down to between 92%-94%. This doesn't happen every time. I'd say it happens two or three times a week. And when it does happen, the battery rapidly discharges throughout the morning, often requiring a recharge by early afternoon. On the days that it doesn't happen, I can easily go the entire day.
Took my iPhone 4s into the apple store with this issue. Genius ran some tests. He determined by battery is wack, which I already knew. So he switched the battery for me. Free of course as its under warranty. Have the issue go get a new battery.
