Droid or iPhone which has better signal reception

I was an altel customer and have been given the opportunity to upgrade my phone. I currently have an HTC desire and the signal reception in the area where I live is terrible at best with this phone. My wifes phone which is not a smartphone gets good reception here. I am looking at getting either the droid 3 or the iphone 4s. I like things about both phones. However, I want to get the one that would the best signal reception in low strength areas. So my question is exactly that...which of the two is better for pulling in weak signals?

Thanks in advance for any response.

The iPhone has by far the best reception of any Verizon phone I've owned. Over the past year or so I've had the original Motorola Droid, BlackBerry Bold, Incredible, Palm Pre Plus, Droid X, iPhone 4 and now iPhone 4S. I have a friends that lives in a VZW dead zone and my two iPhones are the only phones that hold a consistent signal in and out of my friends house without ever losing the signal completely and without the calls breaking up/dropping. The Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, BB Bold, and X all went in and out of service and had dropped calls at my friends house. The Incredible had terrible reception and had no service at my friends house.

The Iphone 4 has at best mediocre RF.The Droid Pro i use has far better RF .Anyone that states their Iphone 4 has great RF has consumed too much apple Kool Aid.The 4S uses a Qualcomm chip and is supposed to be better in the reception department.

My iPhone 4S gets much better reception than my Droid Bionic.

    Verizon's 4G network.

I live in California, not New York. I actually dislike New York.

Did they fix the iPhone antenna so it doesn't kill the signal to hold it to your ear left-handed?

I'm pretty sure they are all based on a Qualcomm chip since Qualcomm won't let anyone else make CDMA chips.

Thanks for the responses so far. I appreciate it. I wish I could bring them both out here at the same time and do a real time comparison. Unfortunately they won't let me do that. I can try one and return it within 14days though.

I used to work for a cell phone store that sold Sprint, Verizon and AT&T and the iPhone was the best of both AT&T and Verizon from my own tests around town and various difficult spots like my basement, so I would say iPhone.

This is what most people have told me I work for a Verizon retailer and many people come in and tell me how the iphone drops more calls than any phone they've ever had, then you add in the defect where the phone altough it is charged just turns off(a problem since the first gen device). I have several people a day who come in with their phone and a blank screen I have to plug the phone into a computer, and give it a few minutes and the phone will finally boot up. The iphone has always had the worst reception of any phone and it brings a network down at&t was decent when I started working for them in '06(left in 10)

Uh, huh, sure... I have never heard of this. Care to post a link to anywhere else that documents this problem?

Here you go sunshine like I said I get at least one two a day fairly common iphone issue it's a defect that has been around since the first gen, the second phone was probably the worst I would see it quite a bit and apple would tell people to swap the sim card.

I must be the luckiest SOB around, because I very rarely have any issues with my iPhone 4.

I have a s*** ton of problems with my crap iPhone 4S including failure to complete calls, battery life sucks, dropped calls, getting really hot, and just other random bugs. I know a dropping calls may have to do with AT&T but dang. On VZW the Droid Bionic outperforms the 4S in almost every way.
