I don't know what you guys are talking about, you skip it the first time by pressing the menu button, select yes the emergency questions, then set up a WiFi connection then power on then off, and sign in with you OVI account. I have Data blocked on my plan.
I do agree that it's BS to make you do that, but at least they don't make you hook it up to a PC when you first set it up.

I've repeated this several times just to make sure. On the Nokia N8 that I have here, it absolutely will not use a Wi-Fi destination to set up the OVI account. I've went in an even tried starting up the phone in offline mode and set up my phone to connect to my router. The connection works fine but when I put my sim card back in and restart my phone in online mode, it will not use the wi-fi. It's also not a matter of the re-inserted sim card re-arranging the access points/destinations either as I've tested with inactive sim cards meaing that the phone should have went to wi-fi as it would have been the only connection available. It will only let me activate through cellular data. If it were just me noticing the same thing, I would say that I could be mistaken or that it's an isolated incident but other users have confirmed what I've said here.
Are you saying that when pressing the menu key and it asks you a question to select "yes"? For me the question is whether to dial 911. Is there a hidden menu after that step that requires further confirmation before dialing 911 and which provides more options?

just a dumb question here:
(im on a 2610 since my N8 is at the service center and I have a data plan but I don't remember how this went after I flashed anna)
Your problem is your phone wants to connect via data instead of wifi for the initial setup only
or
your problem is that after the initial setup (with data usage) your ovi account continues to require data for your phone to function.
to be honest i have no idea how much data you would use to verify your account buy I have used a 5800 without a data plan and i know it wanted packet data for some setup functions (or position data from the nokia server for the Agpps) but afterwards it wass pretty happy with wifi.

the first one... phone refusing to use Wi-Fi to activate Ovi account and Nokia's insistance to "harass" you with the activation screen every time you turn on your phone until you do activate the OVI account...
It's that SSOUI application at the very beginning if it's forgotten your details (often!)
I know that when I'm overseas, I don't allow mobile data and I'm always stuck not able to sign into my Nokia Account, even with wifi. If I'm at home and have wifi as top priority over my data connection, that box will immediately fail saying it can't reach Nokia or something like that.
I'm not sure what it actually affects if you don't sign in though cause I am able to access my imap and exchange email accounts still, browse online yadayada. Infact I find that I have the SSOUI app in the background cause I completely forgot about looking at the phone after entering my pin.
In short, it doesn't really bug me.

What's the point of having a smart phone in this day and age without a data plan? Might as well just stick to a regular cell phone if you're going to be hunting for hot spots all the time.
That's kinda how I feel as well.
And really, Nokia is not forcing anyone into a data plan. You'll just use a few dozen kilobytes of data to activate the account. It'll cost a few bucks. Annoying, yes, but hardly the end of the world (as the OP's rant seemed to suggest).
If you can afford a $400 Smartphone, I don't think an extra $5-$10 is going to leave you broke & homeless.
I'm on the "Unlimited" $10/month Family data plan, which rocks! I keep telling my friend Kristine (who's family plan I'm on) that she should get data as well. She asked, "Why do I need a data plan?". And I pointed out that every time we go anywhere she borrows my phone to look something up. To which she replied, "Yea, so why do I need a data plan. If I want to look something up I'll just borrow your phone."
Just wanted to thank you for this thread. Because of it, I was sure to remember to click "later" when Belle asked me to activate my Nokia account, that way I could set up my wi-fi 1st & not get a data charge (like I did with Anna).

Yes, the nag screen is a one time thing. On Belle, you can now permanently tell the phone to leave you alone and set up an OVI account any time you want (or never do it) without Nokia so kindly "reminding" you about it every time you turn on your phone.
