Newbie, Sorry, Walmart $30 4G Plan, Hotspot, Teather Capable, Cheapest Phone?

    Hello there,

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't even have a cellphone right now.

I just bought a Vizio tablet that needs wifi and I'm looking for a phone or device that can be a hotspot when I'm outside any wifi spots.

Will this 5 Gig plan work for me (don't plan on using many , if any, voice minutes)?

Which phone/device (lowest price, of course) would I need to buy?

Sorry, but I'm so new to this that I don't think I even know all of the right questions to ask.

All suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

Do you care about 4G? Meaning does your area have 4G coverage. If so you could buy the Samsung Exhibit II cwhen it comes out in a few days @199.99 (rumored) or some other 4G capable headsets like the G2 or mytouch4G which could be had used for around the same price.

If 4G is not in your area the devices you need will be cheaper.

If you don't care about the phone itself and just plan to use it as a hotspot, the cheapest device may be the Tmobile Comet. It has wireless hotspot built in (you may need to install quick settings, but thats a free download from Market, no rooting or anything else required) and is a very small light phone. Its 3G only.. Its often on sale at Tmobile for under $100 w/o contract, and you can probably get it for around $60 on ebay or craigslist, and since you don't really care about screen condition (the biggest problem on used phones) might be able to get an even better deal - I bought one a while ago for $25.

I am using the Comet right now as a WiFi hot spot and it works great.

On T~Mobiles site right now as I type this they have it for $74.99.
Was $100 a few days ago so I do not know if this is a limited time sale or they have dropped the price.

By the way, it is actually quite a nice little phone, the call quality is really excellent and I have not had any dropped calls at all with it.
After I heard about the T~Mobile ~ Sprint merger

    Thanks for the help

It looks like many of the areas that I might be using this have 4G.

How much more would I look at paying for a 3G/4G phone to use as a hotspot? I assume that the speed difference is significant?

    $199 seems a bit steep.

Again, voice usage would be entirely incidental.

The difference between the Sk4G and mytouch4G is that one is a 7.2Mbps device (SK4G) and the other is 14.4 Mbps (Mytouch4G). Keep that in mind.

Actually the Sidekick 4G by Samsung has a faster 21m/sec radio.

Looks like my reference is wrong. GSMArena does not list 21 Mbps support

    http://www.gsmarena.com/t_mobile_sidekick_4g-3874.php

However, Phonescoop and PhoneArena list it as 21Mbps. Sorry about the confusion.

Yes on SK4G. I'd imagine the same on MyTouch4G

Is there an update on hotspot for the Exhibit II?
I haven't even tried it but does the Tethering options that come with the phone actually work?
Wish i could get the hotspot feature to work without much work.

Thanks for that, and this is for a hotspot like 'mifi', not just tethering to one device, correct?
