AVI isn't a format, but rather a container. If your phone natively supports the format inside of the AVI then you should be able to play on it on any video app. However, if the format is not supposed, you can try RockPlayer Lite, which can decode numerous formats that your phone does not. However, this is SOFTWARE DECODING. If your phone isn't really fast, it may not play the videos smoothly. If not, and you really want to play the converted videos on the phone, get a program for your computer that will convert the files into format that your phone can natively play, like MP4.

I have an EasyCAP DC60 device letting me convert my analog videos from VCR to digital AVI format. Any suggestions for a free app to be used on my Android phone to view these AVIs?

MyPhoneExplorer is an awesome Android app that let's you sync your Android phone to your computer via WiFi, Bluetooth or Data Cable. You have to download the software onto your computer and your cell phone. It's as close as possible as I've seen for an Android Desktop Software.

Also it let's you view your phones screen and you can see your phones screen AND control it via your computer and mouse. As a matter of fact my Android is connected right now and I am using my computer to control my android. So I'm posting this post from my computer connected to my android. FYI I don't have to use my mouse to use the onscreen virtual keyboard on my android, I just type with my keyboard!

While I am new to the Android world, I have found a few that I like.
Any of the police scanners that are connected to Radio Reference. All the scanners seem to be pretty much the same but I am using 'Scanner Radio" just because I like the layout. I am Not big on listing to people get pulled over but fire and other emergency responders is nice. With bad weather RR has Skywarn Ham Radio feeds, there great in sever weather like tornadoes and also forest fires. I was in TX when the Riley fire hit. I came back to Colorado and was able to hear when my hay was burning.
I also have AA task calender that I like the layout real well I heart radio is good for listening to Clear Chanel Radio stations. I also have local news and weather from 9 news.

I love these topics. What I don't love is that I spend a lot more time posting in them than I perhaps should, but I suppose that just adds to the reader's benefit, no? So, let's begin:

    1. Amazon Appstore. This app really is a dog, it will notify you daily that your apps (if you have any installed through it) need to be updated, when they don't. It's just a nag to encourage you to look at what they have. However, they release a paid app for free every day, and once you own it, you own it for life. The caveat is that you must register a credit card on Amazon.com and set up one-click ordering. Oh, and 99% of the time, the free app sucks. Still, I've gotten many great apps from it. Some of which I still use.

    2. Thumb Keyboard (paid). I got this for free with Amazon, and it's just awesome. My phone doesn't have a keyboard, but this makes typing almost as fast as typing on a computer. In landscape, it splits to either side. It's weird because G and V are duplicated, that still throws me off. I've been using it only a week, though. In portrait, it's basically normal. But it's got all the features I want: space after I accept a word suggestion, auto caps of a new sentence, auto punctuation with double space, etc. IMO it's the best, but everyone has a favourite keyboard, so YMMV. Stick to the free/demo keyboards until you fall in love with one, then pay for it to support the author. A couple are free outright, so if that's what you prefer, consider donating. Or just enjoy.

    3. SoundHound (paid, free). Also got this from Amazon. The free version used to limit you to so many searches, but now is unlimited but with ads. It's uglier than Shazam, previously mentioned, but more accurate in my grueling tests which included remixes, obscure niche songs, and foreign songs. These are both song identifiers, and I actually own both through Amazon. I just prefer SoundHound. Also, SoundHound has a 1x1 widget that will immediately jump into identifying a song, so you can stick this on your home screen. It's actually not registered as a widget (when you go to add something, you have widgets, apps, bookmarks, folders... if you keep scrolling, it's at that top level -- you can even stick it on LauncherPro's dock).

    4. FBReader (free). If you like to read, there are a lot of reader apps that will show off your ebook collection (Aldiko, Go Book), but FBReader is all about actually reading. It's the only one I can configure the way I want and then it gets the hell out of my way and lets me read. Again, if you want something fancy, FBReader is probably the worst choice for you. However, if you're like me and spend 99% of your time in a reading app actually reading, it's worth a shot. I blast the margins completely away so the text fills my screen, and I make the text white and the background black. This is easier on my eyes; you can set the colours any way you like. You can do green on black, yellow on blue, black on white, whatever suits your fancy.

    5. xScope (free). I think xScope's free browser is the best browser for Android. Like keyboards, browsers are a hotly contested topic, so this is just my opinion. I actually own the paid version through Amazon, but I don't see the benefit. It lets you screenshot web pages. I have no use for that. Paid has another feature I don't care about, but I forget what. My wife thinks Miren Browser is the best, but Google pulled it and nobody knows why. She's switched to Dolphin HD, which is really nice but a little too feature-rich for me. What I like about xScope, and if you've been paying attention you'll notice I said the same about FBReader -- it gets the hell outta my way. My homepage is my bookmarks, and it even has a Google search. Nice, simple, elegant. I hit whatever I want to go to, then the Menu button hides its toolbar. It's got all the features I need, just works good. There really are no bad choices in the browser arena... except maybe Firefox, which is a shame because it's the best (again, IMO) on the PC (actually, I use Pale Moon, same thing but optimised for Windows) but not so good on Android.

    6. OurGroceries (free). This is a simple grocery list app, but it's great because it syncs between as many devices as you like, and the website. You register it to your email address (any, my wife used her Yahoo) and anyone else who wants to sync needs to enter that email address and get the master account holder's permission. Once they grant it, they sync, and it's instant, even on crappy phones. It'll remember the grocery items you've added, so you only need to start typing them and tap them to add. So before we leave, we just go through and look at what we need, and one of us just taps it in on the phone or on the computer. We've even added Taco Bell items and Subway ingredients (most of them are already in our lists, like tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, salami, pepperoni, Ranch dressing, etc.) so if either of us is making a run, the other can just add it. No list, no calling while ordering. Simple and elegant.

    7. Amazon MP3 (free) and Google Music (free). You may not be a fan of cloud storage, but if microSD card slots go the way of the dodo, it's nice to have options. That's why I recommend and use both of these. Amazon MP3 gives you 5GB of space and Google Music will take 20,000 of your songs regardless of file size (well, up to 250MB, so I'm told, and yes it does FLAC). I assume both of these will snitch on you if you upload pirated music, so don't do that. Rip your CDs on your computer, clean up the metadata (though Google will ignore it and add its own), and upload them to each service. Amazon has the best deals by far for buying music, and they won't count music you buy from them against your 5GB quota. Google has a bunch of free tracks. YMMV as far as whether they're any good or not. I got about a dozen. I upload whatever I buy on Amazon to Google, so I have it in both places. (Actually, my wife and I share an Amazon account, so everything is there, but her stuff that I don't like (some '90s country) is not in my Google Music account, and my stuff she doesn't like (Enya, for one) isn't in her Google Music account.) Amazon puts 100 albums on sale for $4.99 or $5 even, I forget which, every month. Every day they have a $3.99 album. They usually post the best deals on their Facebook page ("Like" Amazon MP3 to get them in your news feed) but it pays to check the site.

    8. My Writing Spot (paid). This app was expressly created for NaNoWriMo, a challenge to turn out 50,000 words of or toward a novel in the 30 days of November (it's official shorthand for National Novel Writing Month). It's a text editor that... can I get a drum beat... gets the hell out of your way. And it has a word counter. It lets you write in a dozen or so categories (identified by coloured dots), so multiple files in, say, the green category, contribute to the same word count. Useful for chapters/project management. There is a web interface for this at mywritingnook.com (I guess he got in trouble over "nook" from B&N). He doesn't store your text, though, which is nice. Somehow it's done through Google, but I don't see it in Gmail or Google Docs. You might be able to use the website, on its own, for free through your mobile browser, but I'm not sure about that.

    9. Fruit Ninja (paid). I just got a phone that can do games a week ago, and I've tried a bunch (mostly freebies from Amazon, as this was), but this is the one I keep going back to. Fruit and bombs are thrown up from the bottom (you play in landscape) and you have to slice the fruit with a sword (your finger). Fruit that falls unsliced costs you a life, and you have three. Bombs take all three lives (or however many are left). There's also a timed mode where you don't lose and there are no bombs. You can unlock new blades and backgrounds by completing challenges from within the various game modes (e.g. slice 50 bananas).

    10. Angry Birds Rio (free). I've played the original Angry Birds and I don't really like it, it's kinda tough. Rio is easier (so far).

Advanced Task Killer - shows what's open and allows you to kill/shut off, selectively with check boxes. It was free.

Alll kinds ofshit opens without me opening it, this app saves my meager battery life.

I'm a huge text based game guy; I like to log on quick, do my stuff and set it there while collecting money. So I've used a lot of the Storm8 games; all of them in fact, FOR FREE, but now stick to Zombies, Vampires and World War. Other than that my Osmos HD and Asphalt 6 (and tapatalk of course ) keep me more than busy! In fact, any game by Gameloft will cost you most likely but is very rewarding! Glu game are also great like Blood and Glory. Enjoy!
