Is there any wifi tether apps free or paid that doesn't require root that I can use with my evo shift?

You need root to do WiFi tether for 2 reasons.

    1) You need to load a softap firmware so the tether acts as in infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc mode which some devices have issues connecting to.

    2) You need to insert routing rules to enable transparent tethering. Only root can do that in Linux.

If you _must_ use a non-rooted phone, one way would be to use a tethering app, then share it via your PC (Win 7 has support for softap via Virtual WiFi).

Thanks for your response, now is there a root for evo shifts?, when I got mine flashed to boost back in Dec. the guy told me there was no stable root for evo shifts so he could'nt root it. Also what wifi tether apps do u suggest? Barnacle & wifi tether for root users are no longer available in the market

Two things I've discovered that may be relevant here.

    1. There's an app called FoxFi which claims free hotspot tethering with a good many phones. I haven't tested any of the ones you have mentioned here, but hey, it doesn't require root, and it doesn't cost any money.
    2. HTC has started offering bootloader-unlockers. The rest should be easily accomplished by GingerBreak, at least theoretically.

Quick question would Z4 root app or visionary+ work on evo shift to use the wifi tether app before I use these root instructions?

I'm interested in flashing a phone to boost but I have yet to purchase the EVO, but if I purchased one and it had a bad ESN could it still be flashed to boost? I ask because they use Sprint towers so idk if it's blocked off the network or just blocked off sprint if the esn is bad.

The MEID (what newer CDMA phones use instead of an ESN) of your Evo goes bye-bye and is replaced with one cloned from a "donor" phone. This is why a "bad ESN" is a non-issue, but also why the process is a legal can of worms. The whole topic has been debated back and forth quite a bit - do some reading and come to your own conclusion.

It's worth noting that since you don't yet own an Evo, you might want to look into Straight Talk's official BYOD. It's priced comparable to Boost unlimited and you can use any AT&T or T-Mobile phone.
