MTS unlimited data limited out of Provence

I was surfing around the MTS website when I stumbled across some fine print that is now included with virtually all data plans. Here is a quote from there site. "Unlimited Internet and Email access only available in Manitoba. Additional Canadian data over 300 MB charged at $0.35/MB on all smartphones." This is even listed on tablet and internet sticks. Dose anyone know when this came into effect? Would any of us be grandfathered into the old plans where there was no restriction on out of Provence data use. Shouldn't MTS have to notify us of such changes? I see SaskTel is also doing the same but with a 200 MB limit. So I guess MTS must now have there usage billing process in place...

I thought the whole idea of the agreement with Rogers was so that MTS could roam unlimited on the Rogers network across Canada.

    Strange.

If you check the 4G details elsewhere in the site, this restriction doesn't show up. I'm assuming current subscribers will be grandfathered...?

I would not assume anything when it comes to data. Check it out or you could be in for a big surprise!!!!!!!

Checked with MTS this morning, and asked if this change applies to current or just new customers. The response:

Yes, that information is correct and is only for new customers signing up as of November 1st. This will not affect our existing customers. This change is due to roaming agreements with our partners and is unfortunately necessary to allow for the same roaming service MTS customers now enjoy. When you renew your contract, you will be subject to this change.

So not great news overall, but at least they didn't just go and change it for existing customers...!

I wonder if that applies to us going month to month without a contract?

There will always be limitations to "unlimited" data...

Also frequently referred to as "Positive Rate".

So did MTS actually get a new roaming agreement partnership with another provider? I haven't seen any new agreements listed on there website (ex SaskTel or tbytel?) still just Rogers. I as well would be curious if month to month (no contract) is still free to use more than 300 MB of data outside of MB. I can understand having some balance for heavy bandwidth users, but 300 MB is ridiculously small this day and age per month why not 1 gig or how about carry forward data, instead of if you don't use it you lose it. I would even be OK with a 3 or 5 gig a month plan but they don't offer such a plan for smartphone, do they? Just internet sticks.

I found the link that state this is fact, but is unclear about non contract month to month.

So where is a link I can a use to find out my data usage when I need to? Especially when out of province. US providers such as AT&T offer such features, its hard to track your data usage by only seeing it on your monthly bill when its to late. And application will not track out of province usage only.

MTS had a brochure/flyer (glossy) that was in the Free Press today...it gives plan breakdowns, including for (month to month type) situations (cant remember the term they use for it though...) (if you read fine print it says "month to month"... something about starting at $40 a plan tho for 500MB....though not sure if that's data sticks or smartphones.

So I had some free time today (after snow blowing all the snow off my drive way) and decided to ring up MTS customer service to find out if month to month data plan's are excluded from the 300 MB out of Provence stipulation if you had setup your plan prior to October 28 2011 and to my delight it is. So anyone with a contract or month to month plan that was setup prior to October 28 still has unlimited Canadian data. Hurray. And I also asked about the MTS SaskTel roaming agreement and they are still working on it and customer service has been unofficially told it lay be in place by late end of 2011. Hope this helps clear up any confusion.

The best deal in Canada, and worst deal in MB (due to coverage) is TELUS. 5GB of unrestricted data anywhere in Canada- nobody even comes close to that. I know MTS caps its already slow data connection after a certain point. Heck, MTS should just advertise 2G speeds in certain rural areas, as 0.46 mbps down in Traverse Bay is just slightly shy of 4G, no?

    Let's break this down:

MTS' data is unlimited. They throttle your speeds to half after you break the 10GB point, and even then only between the hours of 4pm and 12am.

Current subscribers aren't limited by the 300MB roaming data limit, only new customers. I think that the 300MB limit is way too low, and might hurt them in the long run.

0.46 mbps is faster than 0.00 mbps, which is what Telus offers in those areas.

I think this move to limit roaming data is going to really hurt MTS in the long run, and might force me to switch providers when my contract is up, depending on changes that occur later on and if they give me any more retention deals. Right now it doesn't affect me, of course.

Did I read that right? By the time that happens the good news is you and we may have more choice here such as Bell/Virgin, more towers from Telus for better service. I will wait for that day.....

Wait a minute- are you telling me its better to pay about $20 more per month (pre-bundle discount, after you add grff, call display and VM) to have 0.46 down in the middle of no where? Also, you have your facts wrong, "those" areas, such as Traverse Bay, TELUS has impressive upload/download speeds with HSPA. do the math: I paid $720 more over 3 years so I could pretend to be a hot shot for the 3 times I visited Boissevan, Manitoba and had coverage!!!
