Today at a T-mobile store I was told that a cross upgrade cannot be done on a Galaxy S2 because they are using a "new generation" of sim card which are only being shipped in phones and will not be available stand-alone for about 6 weeks. The only thing I can guess is that the new sims are using NFC technology built in. What are your thoughts on this?
The new SIM cards we have been told will support upcoming features most notably the expected WIFI calling update for the GS2 and Amaze. The NFC technology does currently work with any SIM card just for information transfer, which is currently supported. Also these SIM cards are available and are the loose SIM cards the company is currently sending to retail stores. Hope this answers your questions.
Becarefull with that new simcard. I bought a Samsung Galaxy II retail price and it came with the new simcard. Got it activated then suddenly my tethering option cease. Its telling me I got to pay but I got a grandfather plan.

From a few discussions I've had with TMO reps recently, I doubt that it was the SIM that did it; it was probably the new phone. The tethering controls are in the phone ("Tethering Manager" software) and it performs some sort of check to see if your account is allowed for tethering, else you get blocked. The grandfathered plans, despite the fact that many were sold explicitly for the purpose of tethering, and TMO reps even helped people set up tethering, are no longer tethering plans as far as the blocking software is concerned.
If you root the phone you can freeze the "Tethering Manager" and then you can tether on a legacy plan. At least supposedly that is the case, I have not personally tried it yet. With my old N1 running CM6 (which doesn't contain the "Tethering Manager" obviously), I had success tethering both with an old (circa 2005) and new (early 2012) SIM.
