    CM7 Advice/Tutorial?

Been wanting to do this, but can't find a WHOLE lot about it on here when I search. I've never done anything with modding a phone and my phone isn't rooted.

Is this a good idea? Is it safe? If so, tutorial? Thanks!

Oh wow. Thanks! Sucks that some things don't work with CM7. Sounds pretty complicated, too.

if you have an optimus V, i found this video to be very useful:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_POvZaMlOk

he walks you through the process of flashing the custom rom. However, it's still a good idea to do your research first instead of just following blindly.

The ONLY thing that really doesn't work is HDMI out

I have a Triumph. Hmmm...the HDMI out is a cool feature, even though I NEVER use it. It's neat that it's there, though. You never know when you might need/want it. Thanks for the links. Maybe I should hold off until someone makes it 100% functional or something.

And activation; you need to flash the stock ROM if you ever need to activate it again.

I'm going to wait until the Optimus Black is released, then I'll flash my Triumph to CM7 if it looks like there will be no official Gingerbread update.

That's insane. I really wanna do it, but am worried for some reason. What if Virgin ends up releasing an official update? Will my modded phone not be able to receive it? For the most part, I'm satisfied with my Triumph, but I have 3G off always unless I need it because of battery life (which is still good in my eyes) and just don't wanna mess anything up, having never done anything like this to a phone.

I've got many answers to all of your questions. Virgin Mobile is not going to release a Gingerbread update for any of their previous phones. Or at least, I wouldn't count on it, as the chances of that are very slim. Honestly, the whole HDMI output really isn't a big deal. I've never used mine. I see absolutely no use for it. There is a huge difference in the roms, you can do so much more with it. If you want a how to, I could probably make a YouTube video for you this evening. I will gladly discuss any of the questions you may have over the phone. Just drop your phone number in a private message to me and I'll be sure to give you a call tonight.

Wow, thank you! While your offer seems sincere, I don't think I'm comfortable with giving my number out, I hope you understand. BUT...a YouTube video would be awesome if you'd be willing to do it. Bear in mind, I've never done anything to a phone, but am savvy enough to follow direction for sure.

Follow the android forums link. It's dead simple.

You can't screw your phone up, the first thing you do is install a custom recovery and take a full backup. No matter what happens after that, you can restore your backup if you want and be right back where you started.

I installed CM7 on my triumph and it's been a net positive, especially around network performance, speed, and battery life. I don't even have the dongle thing for HDMI out, and I can't ever imagine there being a situation where I would need to use it.
