So really, it's either a GPS lock or don't bother using.
You drive by houses and business with WIFI. Google's database of SSID's + GPS coordinates gives you a very accurate rough fix.

"Rough" as in 20m. That's good enough to start navigating.

Still not convinced, but keep trying.
Some day, may not be any time soon, but some day, you just might actually convince one of us that it's a good phone that's worth of the money. Just don't hold your breath.

If I remember right, you can get map directions without a GPS lock, but navigation requires it - so it doesn't matter either way.

Google Nav uses the WIFI-assisted GPS lock. You will see a "large" circle (20-100m) around the navigation carrot, but it will let you navigate.

I stopped using Google Navigation with rough estimates when I was on a highway that passed over another highway, and it convinced me I was somewhere I was not. Pretty creepy actually, hurtling down the wrong highway (I thought) at 70mph and being told to go somewhere I couldn't.

There are several fixes for the bad GPS being touted on XDA. I'm not advocating grabbing a fix for a bad phone, but if you like everything except the GPS, this could theoretically fix your problem

It can be bad enough with a lock. Last month mine told me to turn right onto the on-ramp (highway), then make a U-turn. It was trying to get onto the outer road, and just couldn't understand the map. Unfortunately for me, the next off ramp was 5 miles away.

I... think that's probably just a bad Maps app. I've done that before, but usually because I wasn't following the directions. (That's one of the downsides in being from the boonies.)

Hey fellow members! No announcement in sight from Virgin for good upcoming Android phones. The people in charge must be uninformed or stupid or both! Net 10 and Straight talk have the LG Optimus 2x coming this month, which blows away anything Virgin has to offer. It will work with their $45 unlimited plan. After 10 years of being a steady Virgin Mobile costumer I will be switching. I also hope that many more will to teach that company to be more aware of costumer needs! The fact they will throttle data in march makes it even easier for me to make the switch!

Maybe they are holding out on VM to try to get all of us 25.00 a month people to leave first lol.

I'm willing to bet an extra $10/mo fee for WIMAX and $25/mo plans will need to upgrade. That is what Sprint has done in the past and that would make the cheapest prepaid WIMAX plan $45/mo.

Ugh... I'm sure they'll tack on a "4G" fee. And VM 4G will be about as fast as contract 3G.

People whine about how lousy battery life is on existing phones; just wait until we get an old dual radio 4G handset that burns down the battery toggling between the networks.

I'm willing to bet it will be more like - capped LTE, then drops to unlimited 3G.
