    Fido exchanges and microphone gain

The title says it all: I have noticed that people with Fido exchanges have higher microphone gain. At first I thought it was my phone, everybody complained that my phone's mic was too loud. Then the same with my next phone, and the one after. And it isn't my voice, or that I yell into the phone. If I have the fan vent on in my car, people think I am on the highway with my windows down. Luckily my Samsung has a mic gain adjustment.

I am not with Fido anymore, but still use a Fido native number. I have heard others complaining about the same thing, and guess what? They are all Fido customers, or are using Fido numbers. If it were a landline I'd say its in the wires. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it may be some kind of GSM provisioning specific to the exchange, which I am hoping to find a way to modify. Or maybe its locked down, just like the number of rings before voicemail for Rogers, or the the SMS timestamp bug we all know and love....

Any clever folks have any insight, ideas? I am imagining things? Please discuss

It's entirely possible. And Fido numbers/exchanges are completely separate from Rogers and may have been set to higher volumes pre-merger.

In any case, I like it. Many people complain that the volumes on Canadian carriers are too low compared to other countries, but Fido seemed just right...

Yes, Fido exchanges and licenses are 100% independent from Rogers. It's not like the fake brands such as Chatr, Solo, Koodo which are, in fact, simply the parent companies exchanges. There are 5 national providers in every technical sense: Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility, Globalive Wireless, DAVE Wireless, and Fido Solutions.

Actually, I think Fido is still the only wireless provider that is an official CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) which was set up in the early days. Fido was a direct competitor to landline providers and was able to port in landline phone numbers years before Canada even had number portability (this is why you were able to port your home phone into CityFido and get a free white pages listing).

Interesting stuff, at least to me anyhow. Probably just bored everyone else haha.

I am curious as to whether there is a V21 provisioning that could be implemented that would be able to reduce the gain level, or maybe all of these pre-merger exchanges are hard-wired with this attribute, with no soft tweakability? Telephone number change not an option, at least until I get a different job!

You are having this issue too? I think this is extremely widespread, but that few on the consumer level have identified it for what it is. If so, maybe if enough people make enough noise (bad pun) we can get it rectified. Maybe to some it's not too bad but I spend a lot of time on the phone at work, and when I forget to tweak the setting for the mic — which resets when my phone restarts — I get the other end screaming "FIX YOUR F*ING MICROPHONE!!!". After a while some people start to resent it.

Oh snap. So what happens if they turn it down and then all the people who LIKE it louder start complaining?
