I recently ported to the new Tmo $30 plan. Thought I had researched it and it would work. Their coverage ended up being quite a bit worse, in my neck of the woods, than VM. When I went to Tmo I ported out of VM and my Optimus V. I ported back about 2 weeks later, to the same phone. Ever since I reactivated my old phone it has been glitchy. In fact, the other party can't even hear my voice but they sound good to me. When I plugged the usb cable between the phone and pc, the Optimus V would oscillate rapidly between the usb mass storage screen and the home screen. It would never allow a usb hookup. The found new hardware wizard would keep coming up on my pc as well like it saw the phone for a second and went away. Data and texting worked fine.
I was on the phone with tech support for about a half hour and they sent me a refurb replacement Optimus V. My question is did VM do something to prevent reactivation of the hotspot capable phones? Sure enough, they sent the version 2.2.2 which is not easily hot-spotted. Tonight, after letting my Optimus V sit for three days without a battery and not activated (I am currently using a Curve) I turn on the V. Not glitchy, the usb cable problem seems to have gone away. Do I risk it and keep the old phone or keep the refurb replacement? Am I being paranoid? All I know is that a perfectly good phone quit working the day I ported back and reactivated service. Appreciate any thoughts.
Just research how to flash a stock 2.2.1 rom to the new phone. I believe there is a good post about it over on androidforums. Its very easy and its worth having a custom recovery on the phone anyway. That will give you your easy hotspot back and you can keep the new phone.

Might as well take the few extra minutes to flash CM7 or a froyo based rom to double battery life.
