How do you know which ones have unlimited data plans?
Do you have any tips on the process like how to prevent from getting burned?
They usually advertise they have it. Or you may just have to contact the other party and see for sure. When I took the plan I have over, the other party, myself and vzw customer service were on a conference call together and we did everything over the phone in ten minutes.
Funnily enough, there was some internal documentation published in the last day or two regarding this loophole.
Mostly essentially saying "KNOCK IT OFF".
I can read between the lines of corporate speak
Why would they do that, and not simply "fix" their system to stop automatically adding Unlimited Data when a CS rep intentionality adds the 4G Mobile Hotspot to an account?

How long did it take you to find a unlimited data plan?
I got new service yesterday. Got an Iphone. Came home and did 611. I told the rep that My job needs to see the Hotspot as a seperate charge in order to reimburse me. He said ok not a problem. I didn't mention Unlimited Data at all. I hung up and checked my account and it said Unlimited Data. Cancelled the Hotspot and still shows as unlimited.
Did it late lastnight so didn't have a chance to play around.

9,781.6KB of Unlimited
Was this for totally new service or did you update one of your current lines?
If you updated one of you current lines what did you tell them at the store?
Do you think this would work if I updated a 2 year old 3g usb modem with only data on it to a 4g modem?

Honestly, I don't know why there's not an edit in the system at least for consumer accounts created after a certain date that prevents unlimited data from being added.
I know why the ability is there - because it makes fixing a case where someone's had to ESN swap to a basic phone for a few days while waiting for a replacement a much more customer friendly process.

Brand new service that I started on 12/10/2011. I didn't say a word at the store. I came home and went right on 611 and told the rep that I needed to add the Mobile hotspot and it needed to show as a seperate charge because work reimburses me the money and needs to see it each money as a seperate charge. That is all I said to him. I didn't mention unlimited Data. When I got off the phone I went straight to Verizon and checked my account and it said Unlimited.
I doubt it will work on the usb modem stuff. I assume it is for phone plans only, but I honestly don't know much about Verizon. Was on Sprint for years and moved to ATT for a couple of weeks and now Verizon
They are probably not worried about some people getting this added to the account. New Customers are numbers and numbers help keep them in front of AT&T and Sprint. In reality I wonder how many of the people getting the Unlimited actually will come close to even hitting the 2gb plan. Most people using high Data probably already on Unlimited.
Well it seems now if you have a 4G device, 4GB would be a very safe limit of data usage, I would even say up to 5GB you have no issues at all, since they are offering 4GB for $30 now.
I have only went over 4GB a few times. Highest I went on 4G was 9GB.
Home ISP, RR-Turbo WiFi, $80/mo | Verizon 4G, $30/mo Unlimited
School, $5,000/semester | Work

So you have to call in to add Mobile Hotspot it can't be added online?
Don't know. I called in to make sure it showed up as a seperate charge. They didn't question anything at all. They just did it and said can I help you with anything else. If they give you a hard time just say you have to talk to your work and hang up. Then call back and try again with a different rep. It seems to have worked for tons of people.
If you are on tiered data, you will be unable to add the mobile hotspot online so just call them but don't mention unlimited at all. My friend switched from Sprint a couple of weeks ago and was able to get this.
