So how does this help me? Are you saying to cancel the Hot Spot later? Otherwise I'm paying an additional $30/mth.

It's been recommended to hold onto the Hotspot at least one month if possible. Remember this is a work around to get Unlimited Data for those that do not have it. And since the 4G Hotspot is required to get it, those that turn around and immediately drop it do run the risk of also losing their Unlimited Data plan if Verizon wants to not play so nice. I see no biggie for holding onto it for a month. I may still hold onto the HotSpot anyways since that really is a good deal anyways.

I haven't posted in a LONG time on HF but just wanted to thank everyone on this thread for this awesome tip!

I switched to Verizon a few days ago (mainly because of LTE) and used this tip on Sunday. It took a few seconds to ask for the 4G hotspot and the phone rep congratulated me for getting unlimited data. She almost sounded more excited than me and also advised not to drop the hotspot!

    Thanks again to all!
Still looking for the best deal in wireless!

Not dropping the hotspot (at least for awhile) is something I've tried advising others not to do too if possible. Glad she said that. I've seen someone else post elsewhere that a rep told them that too.

Just to throw into the mix here...

I have a co-worker and good friend who just happen to buy a new 4G Android phone last week. Because he needed it, he had the 4G Hotspot feature added when he bought it.

However, he has the 4G data plan, increased to 6G of data due to the Hotspot feature, but not unlimited.

Why? Is the link between the 4G Hotspot feature and unlimited data not available at the VZW stores too?

What your friend has is what's actually supposed to happen on devices that are not grandfathered onto unlimited.

So the rep actually did their job correctly.

That or at the store level they may not have correct permissions anyways. I've heard of others in stores trying to add it but can't. So it may not be that they can't but just aren't able to. All of the ones I've seen that have added it have been over the phone.

But hey if this is Verizons way of wishing everyone a Merry Christmas I'm all for it. lol

I am thoroughly confused now, just got off the phone with Verizon.

I added another line to my account today in an effort to get the unlimited data plan and here is what I was told:

All Mobile Hotspot Access is unlimited data!

Access to Unlimited Mobile Hotspot on 3G network is FREE there is no need to pay the additional $30 unless you plan on accessing 4G. (5 Devices can be supported)

Access to Unlimited Mobile Hotspot on 4g network is $30. (8 Devices can be supported)

The rep stated when using Mobile Hotspot it has nothing to due with your normal data plans all is bypassed since your phone is being used as a modem.

I paid the $30 anyway because I was so confused and my plan did not show unlimited data and now it does see image.Name: data.png

I will keep this plan and pay the extra $30 happily if it works as advertised.

Get my bill in 8 days it will be interesting to see how it is stated on the official billing.

I do not but was unsure if what she was saying was accurate since I have not seen it mentioned anywhere that you could use unlimited data in the hotspot configuration for free.

I do business travel daily to 4G areas and feel more comfortable with the unlimited data showing in my account than the 4GB. I also saw in some of the other forums that people are losing the unlimited status when they remove the MHS feature from their accounts.

Does anyone know if it is true that you get FREE Unlimited Data when using your 4G phone as a MHS in a 3G area?

Took me way too many times but finally got a rep to add the unlimited 4g hotspot and she said when it added the unlimited data auto added. Perfect...

Thanks OP. Two lines now with unlimited data and one with unlimited hotspot.

I know from experience that if you have a 4G phone you can take the lte sim card and put it in a MiFi device and it will work on your normal data for the smartphone. Just to be on the safe side I add the hotspot on though so I can use a high amount with no questions asked.

Best bet is to call instead of doing it at the stores.

@tadpole88: the unlimited hotspot only works with 4G phones.

There is not enough facepalm in the world for how wrong that rep is.

    Seriously.

In order to be legally tethering on the VZW network with any device in any area (3G or 4G) there needs to be an appropriate feature code added to the account, whether that code is the $30 unlimited that's allowed for grandfathered unlimited plans on 4G devices, the $20 code for 3G devices or the embedded code with the tiered pricing.

If you had tried tethering without the appropriate codes attached in billing, you would have gotten a re-direct to a webpage asking you to subscribe to the service.

Just... FFS... [and this is me being frustrated at my co-workers now] how hard is it to take the extra minute or two to research and make sure you get the correct answer? (don't answer - it's a rhetorical question)

From their website, I get this:

    Wireless Internet Access

Select any of the following features: 3G Mobile Hotspot & Mobile Broadband Connect Select Smartphones can be used as a modem for notebooks with a USB cable or 3G Mobile Hotspot on up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices. 2GB data/mo included.

    $20.00 /mo
