Any new cities being bumeped up to 3G from EDGE? or are they done?
I have been wondering if T-Mobile will upgrade any new cities with edge into this era (3G) or (4G) seems like they have many places where they could use it.. or are they just gonna make the current cities faster.. I say deploy HSPA+ 42mbps where you can and begin to cover up those EDGE cities at least..
Here in Illinois, they recently added yorkville, IL to 3g (from edge), quincy, jacksonville, pittsfield, lincoln, and for some very odd reason, one exit off I-80 in north central Illinois. (Not the town near it, wtf is up with that?) so here they are adding 3g still. Some more this past few months down in MO too. (desoto, mo for example)
They might have halted upgrades, due to the AT&T announced buyout from March. But, with opposition forming, they might want to pick up the pace on the upgrading.
They didn't halt any upgrades here. This year they did a lot of 3G fill in for Vegas (not ANY at my house though!) at least 6 cell sites from EDGE to 3G alone in the SW valley, added 3G to Casa Grande, AZ, Pahrump and Boulder City, NV, and expanded 3G coverage in California in various parts. they really need press announcements for this **** because people want to know about it.
I just posted about a rural 3G expansion in Central California in another thread. Seems to have been completed in last two weeks (last time I recall checking their maps). Copied post below
Surprisingly T-Mobile appears to have just completed a big expansion of their 3G network in Central California. Previously only the cities of Fresno/Clovis, Visalia, and Bakersfield were covered, now they're covering a ton of surrounding smaller towns and farms. My hometown shows up as covered... I'll have to check it out someday.
I don't know if it's related, but Amtrak California just launched wi-fi on all their trains, and T-Mobile (along with Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T) are supposedly providing the net access with two data cards of each provider on each train. If the coverage map is correct, T-Mobile's 3G/4G now covers the Amtrak San Joaquin trains pretty well with the exception of a small gap between Merced and Chowchilla. To be fair coverage out there sucks, since it's away from any town.
The area looks small, but keep in mind from the bottom to the top of that map is an area of about 150 miles... and there are many small towns with multiple towers each, along with highways.
I'm within 10 miles of 4G coverage, (supposedly HSPA+ or w/e) and I have GPRS coverage..
They have EDGE surrounding areas of 4G coverage.. ..
I'm in between towns and i have GPRS, only a mile south do I get EDGE speeds.
Edge is still slow, but manageable. This is in Western NC, hopefully they keep on with plans to upgrade things.

I was surprised, they added the remote towns of Tehachapi and Mojave to 3G. This was in the last year.

LIES!
Facts are, life is better on the T-Mobile side
All the EDGE and GPRS areas here in Northern California that were that way at the beginning of the year are still that way. They have added some HSPA+ to already 3G areas, like Redding, Yuba City, Marysville and Chico, but their 3G upgrade of EDGE and GPRS areas has ground to a screeching halt. I am really disappointed in T-Mobile, AT&T has in that same time got all but a couple of towns in NorCal upgraded to 3G, and has added HSPA+ w/Enhanced Backhaul to several areas, like Mendocino and Lake Counties. I have 3G from 3 carriers at my place now, Verizon, AT&T (plus HSPA+ w/Enhanced Backhaul) and U.S. Cellular, but T-Mobile remains EDGE, they and Metro PCS seem content to bring up the rear in the North State.
Edit-I would be more than happy to switch my AT&T lines over to T-Mobile, but their lack of signal expansion and with NorCal being mostly EDGE and GPRS (north of Santa Rosa and Sacramento), I just can't do it, I have 3G pretty much everywhere now with AT&T and Verizon. I have a feeling though with this merger mess going on, and with their daddy in Germany all but abandoning them, the upgrades may never come under the name of T-Mobile

Remember, AT&T allowed your market to stagnant from EDGE Wireless buyout (in 2004?) Until just this last year, 2011.
T-Mobile is still the new kid on the block in Ukiah, having only been built in 2009.
That said, T-Mobile has done a beautiful job with HSPA+ rollout in Southern California, with speeds up to 20m/sec on new android phones.

That's true, though they are sure making up for it now big time, I am not a big fan of AT&T but I have to give them credit where credit is due. Like I said, If T-Mobile would get as much 3G as AT&T has in NorCal, I'd definitely move my AT&T lines over to them, but I need 3G here and in my travels for work (everywhere in NorCal north of Santa Rosa and Sacramento to the Oregon and Nevada Borders), and T-Mobile just can't do that for me right now, where Verizon and AT&T can. I just feel kinda let down by them up here, whereas Verizon, AT&T and U.S. Cellular have all paid a lot of attention to us, I still hold out some hope for T-Mobile, but my enthusiasm for them has gone way down from when they started rolling out service in our area.

I didn't see his nonsense until you quoted it because he's on my shortlist now. There's to reasoning here, he's not worth the seconds it takes to tell him rural northern California 3G is the least of T-Mobile's worries and can you GTFO the T-Mobile forum if you have nothing new to say.

If T-Mobile had any integrity, they would give those who live in those areas the option to purchase a 2G data plan at a lower cost. Instead they charge those customers the same prices for data as those living in 4G areas. It's just an unethical cash grab on their part.

Then why doesn't T-mobile close up shop and stop taking customers' money if they don't want to provide quality service in that area?

It's interesting how you try to resort to cyber-bullying when you can no longer speak about a topic in a logical manner.

super unfortunate in the T-Mobile forums, but needs to be done. I suggest others take the same route if you're sick of seeing this cancer overrun the T-Mobile forum.

FWIW, they also filled in the I-88 gap between Dekalb an Aurora, and they're expanding into Sycamore!
