Need a handset with the old unlimited data plan (3g)

I have an old indirect employee plan that has unlimited data ($15 add on) and would like to purchase a new handset that won't get flagged as a 4G/Smartphone in their system.

Any suggestions? The CSR person mentioned that Palm and older Blackberry's can get away with this. I would rather have an android based phone, but I am not sure what's available.

    Thanks in advance.

I believe the Samsung Reclaim is your only Android option that is free of the $10 fee. That said, I'm not sure it works with pre Simply Everything plans. I'm pretty sure the "latest and greatest" phone that works with original data plans (and $30 SERO) is the HTC Touch Pro 2.

Older Blackberries only work with a Blackberry add-on, which is like 30 bucks--so your just as good as going with a new plan and getting any phone you want. (I know some people were able to get a free BB add-on but I'm sure that's long over).

It's most likely running Android by booting it from the SD card.

I had a T-Mobile HD2 (windows based phone with Android on the SD card) and played around with it for a month or so. It's like the Hertz car commercial, "not exactly"

You're better off either just getting a feature phone and telling Sprint to screw off or paying the $10 and getting a good phone. I'd love to see everybody on all the carriers tell them to screw off, we're not paying your prices, but I might as well wish for free lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings everyday too.....

you can put android on Touch Pro2 storing it on SD Card, however its really slow, not all apps work on it, nor do you have GPS or Bluetooth while using Android. (if you are gonna put android make sure your memory card is a class 4, for faster read/write, it will help android performance)

But the phone itself it does it job, reliable alarm clock, some web browsing without flash, texting (best slideout keyboard!!!) I updated to windows 6.5 and comes with a newer HTC Sense, however it tends a lag.

Make sure you delete your text messages here n there(limited memory on phone, mms can be stored on sd card)

the phone is durable, for screen protector get the privacy one, its cool plus its also thick layer so it really protects your screen for drops, scratches, etc...

but myself im planning to upgrade to either motorola photon or samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch. (i need more out of the browsing, a lil games here n there, netflix, etc... only on iphones or android phones)

Got a TP2 and it had a constant audible "clicking" noise that was coming from the receiver. So, I am not sure if I should find another TP2 or try something else. Any phones you guys can recommend to me?

    Hey guys,

Resurrecting this thread because I still need a replacement phone that I can activate and still enjoy the 3G unlimited data.

Other than a TP2, what other phones should I look for? I was considering an LG Rumor Touch, Sanyo Incognito, and Samsung Seek.

Should I stay away from any of these handsets? I am open to any suggestions.

    Thanks!

LG Rumor Touch is the best of those you list, by far. The Incognito is junk.

Other options include the LG Lotus (better than the Lotus Elite), and then legacy smartphones: Centro (bad for webbrowsing but otherwise very good), WM phones like Moto Q9m, Diamond, Treo Pro.

If you really want Android, probably the best is the HTC Touch (it has the best Android port by far).

How about the Palm Pre? Would they activate that phone on my old plan?

Not sure the name of your old plan, but I had to upgrade from Sero ($30) to Sero Premium ($40) to activate my Palm Pre.

I would upgrade to sero premium & LG optimus

If you don't mind the small jump from $30 to $40, you could switch to Sero Premium and an LG optimus S. (It didn't have a $10 premium data charge w sero premium last I checked.)

For the price difference it is almost like unlimited minutes with the unlimited mobile-to-mobile. I almost never touch my 500 base minutes now, so it was a good deal for me. But I suppose it depends how many voice minutes you need if it is worth it or not.
