iphone 3g unlock help, please (currently on 05.14.02)
I am looking to unlock iphone 3G for my upcoming trip.
It has a modem firmware: 05.14.02
Version: 3.1.3 (7E18)
I read everywhere that this firmware is not unlockable. what are my options? I couldn't find any page to downgrade the firmware either.
So, I have to upgrade the base band to 06.15 and unlock it? I was watching a youtube, he was saying it is not recoverable. what does it mean? 6.15 means that I need to upgrade the OS also to 4.x? Will it become extremely slow?
If i have only one option, can someone point me to step by step instructions on where to download the correct firmware, etc.?
Response will be intermixed with your statements, Please review by statement.
It has a modem firmware: 05.14.02 This is a Correct Current Version
Version: 3.1.3 (7E18) You could upgrade to 4.2.1 so that you get additional usable features on the phone, but you may get some speed degradation, however, the unlock that you mentioned here in your question, will use the same baseband of 06.15, without issue.
I read everywhere that this firmware is not unlockable. what are my options? I couldn't find any page to downgrade the firmware either. This is correct, there is no way to unlock this version currently, not with software. There are some options for unlocking chips, like the use of the GEVEY chip for the iphone 4, but it is not recommended. Also, correct, you cannot downgrade from your current version to any other version, you can upgrade to 06.15, but you cannot currently downgrade from this. The downgrade process is being worked on currently, but currently there is no release date. It is a very difficult process to make this work.
So, I have to upgrade the base band to 06.15 and unlock it? I was watching a youtube, he was saying it is not recoverable. what does it mean? 6.15 means that I need to upgrade the OS also to 4.x? Will it become extremely slow? Sadly to say, Upgrading to 06.15, is your only option currently, if you don't want to use an unlock chip, (currently, i'm not sure where you can purchase an unlock chip). The only things that you need to look for after its been upgraded, would be specifically check, GPS (No GPS on 3G, only 3Gs), sometime resetting your network settings is necessary, but rare. You do NOT have to Upgrade to 4.xx to make this happen, I have done it several times, however, that is my job, I am the person at our company that works on ALL the Apple Products. If you do upgrade to 4.x, it will become slower, beware of that, depends on how you use the device, as to how slow it will be.
If i have only one option, can someone point me to step by step instructions on where to download the correct firmware, etc.? Sorry to say, There are NO instructions on how to upgrade your baseband while you are on 3.1.3 and trying to remain on 3.1.3, however, there are some great tutorials available for upgrading to 06.15 after upgrading to a 4.x version. However, you would need to know some specific things about upgrading, restoring, saving SHSH blobs prior to upgrading, etc. But Beware, the biggest GOTCHA you will run into is, NOT being able to run a standard system restore any longer. Once you do this baseband upgrade, you will need to run a special process to restore your device, or create a special restore firmware file that you will need to use whenever you need to restore your device, (there are utilities to do this available for free on the web), this is only due to the 06.15 baseband installed. When restoring your device, you will come to a sort of bricked instance where it fails the install and then returns to restore mode only, this is because it cannot rewrite the baseband, Don't Worry!! This is easily recoverable, just be prepared by downloading the free utility recboot, just remember there are several steps and utilities that you will need, once you do this. anyway, your welcome to email us if you'd like. iPhoneDoctor@all-star-wireless.net Hope this information helps somewhat.
