Yesterday I got a 3G signal on my iPhone 4S in Burnsville, MN at McDonald's. I ran speedtest and got about 1Mb down and up.

The existing sites already run 2G on PCS.

Permits are needed because the upgrade involves replacing the majority of the equipment at the cell site. New antennas are being installed as part of the upgrade process, among other things such as having remote radio units mounted at the top of the cell site. This should improve improve coverage slightly, so if you have to stand by a window to use your phone now, it might work a little further into the building.

Bars are not a true indication of signal strength or quality.

The places I've checked in Csprings, then I25 between Csprings and Denver to I225, then N on I225, then W on I70 to downtown...

    Is still Edge on 1900.

Hopefully we can see some refarmed spectrum around here before end of the year. Unfortunately, the FCC website says they only own 15mHz of PCS in Csprings/Denver. Who knows where we fall on the list.

It probably falls under the "Needs a strong LTE network" list. One HSPA+ carrier will get soaked up fairly easily so T-Mobile USA will have find ways to mitagate network congestion. It sounds like T-Mobile USA will have to rely on a strong HSPA+ and LTE AWS network plus at&t roaming to make up for the lack of PCS spectrum in your and other BTAs.

You sure of that? Most everything I've seen says that they own 40MHz of PCS in Denver at least, dunno about the Springs though. Denver's always been one of T-Mo's more spectrum-rich markets, from what I know.

According to phonescoop, T-Mobile owns 30MHz of AWS in NY, Chicago, Phoenix, LA, and Seattle.

So I wonder how much of that they are using for Dual Carrier HSPA+ in those markets currently:

So, I wonder what type of network would they have if they use PCS and AWS for HSPA+/LTE.

I stand corrected good sir, according to the FCC's site, they own a total of 30mHz here and in Denver, according to the "FCC Spectrum Dashboard" (google it).

    1870 - 1885
    1950 - 1965

    In the PCS band.

They're using 20mhz of their AWS band for DC-HSPA+. They'll be using 10mhz for LTE.

T-Mobile is currently testing 3G on PCS at night, and will light up the network in the next month or so.

The default nowadays is epc.tmobile.com or was it .net

the maximum speed depends if the phone supports it. check the s2 spec on what is its data speed limit...

Assuming you're connected to an HSPA+ 42 equipped tower, there's about 100 other things that are going to affect speed. Attenuation, signal strength, load on the cell, etc. As with all data connections, theoretical max is just that, theoretical.
