Checked my data usage after some tethered video streaming on my tablet today. Boy did my eyes get wide when I saw the tether section - phone claims 8GB sent & 8.2GB received. Even at sustained maximum theoretical throughput (in both directions, mind) I was not connected long enough to generate that much traffic (and this was on battery); clearly a bug. I couldn't come up with search terms to turn up anything about it on here, but apparently it's not a new one:

How long have you had the phone you where tethering to? It doesn't reset the data every month, you have to do that manually. My last phone had about 12GB of data received and 4GB sent or something like that, that wasn't in one month, that was total accrued over a year. How often do you reset that counter?
I try to reset the counter at the beginning of every billing month. I was a tad late this month, so my last reset was Dec. 12 @ 9:03AM.
So far, my cellular provider has me down for not quite a GB going back to the 7th, of which ~400MB is noted as tethering. My usage over the last 3 months is not even 7.5GB..
Follow-up in case anyone ever looks up the thread: service provider billed ~2.5GB for the month; in line with what I expected. As I said, it is a data counter bug with (AFAIK) an unknown trigger. As the apple link implies, it seems to jump in multiples of 4GB up AND down (plus your true usage).

Well, I tend to take the Apple Support Communities discussions with a grain of salt. They are free user to user help forums and discussions with no official interaction from Apple. It's user to user, not Apple tech support.
OP, I suggest you never rely on the phone's internal data counter too much and rely on your provider's online data counter instead. Many times, providers round up usage to the nearest megabyte and not per kilobyte that your phone may or may not do.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??
Sarcasm is a fine art...

It's not a matter of if you win or lose, it's how you assign the blame
Agree.. the iPhone internal counter would only be good for indication. Never use that for actual data tracking.
But for the TS problem, it's definitely a software bug in my opinion.
It happened again today. I was at ~1.5GB total usage for the month so far, wifi-tether streamed about 1/2 an hour of Netflix (and the quality wasn't great) and the tether counter jumped to 8 up/8.1 down. Still on iOS 5.1
Carrier's counter puts me at under 2GB total. Again, just a weird bug, and I'm only really posting so others are aware of it.
