Advice: Unlocked Android on Petro Canada

New poster here. Interested in acquiring an unlocked Android phone, then activating on Petro-Canada with unlimited browsing. For example, I can purchase LG Optimus One from Telus prepaid, or Samsung Galaxy 550 from Virgin. Thinking to get it unlocked, then using P-C sim card. Just wondering how the phone will work, particularly internet / apps, and any special procedures I should be aware of. Thanks.

Just be careful about frequencies, it operates Petro Canada operates on the Rogers network. So don't go buying some Wind or Videotron phone and then unlocking it. Rogers, Fido, Bell and Telus phones are fine. Unless of course the Bell or Telus phone is NON SIM CARD (CDMA), then you are screwed.

Once you've got it unlocked, you just simply order a sim card from Petro Canada Mobility's website. The instructions for putting in the settings are here:

Please note APPS DO NOT WORK on Petro Canada. Only port 80 is open, so you can only surf and watch youtube videos. Some people have managed to install a PROXY software that routes all traffic through port 80 so your APPS will work, but this involves rooting the phone and then installing software on it...beyond my knowledge

Remember monthly plan is $8 for unlimited surfing. $10 if you are on pre-paid, so do monthly.

Actually, the port restrictions have been gone for at least a few weeks. I haven't had any issues on my Android phone, including things such as Gmail, Market, and Google Talk.

It looks like the port restrictions are back in as of Feb 1.

I just switched to Petro Canada today after reading all the advice from this forum and other forums... it works wonderfully on my Rooted LG Optimus 2x. I preconfigured everything from APN to installing Autoproxy. Youtube a bit slow but i dont really care for that I would only use youtube when on a wifi.

I stand corrected... youtube actually works pretty well... and PUSH email is working as well. The only thing doesnt work are my VOIP apps. Surprisingling even TextME works, i dont have to pay extra for outgoing texts..

here are specific details on APN setup in Android.

Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
(hit the Menu button, select "New APN"), then enter:

Name: Petro-Canada
APN: goam.com
Proxy: 10.128.1.69
Port: 80
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
Server: goam.com
(didn't touch MMSC, MMS proxy, MMS port, MCC or MNC)
Authentication Type: None
APN type: <Not set>

What is TextME??

Text+ works well on the petroc data plan even on iPhone.
