    GrooVe IP Question...

I am taking the easy way out and posting this question, but did do some head-scratching over this by searching for clues.

When I make a call using GrooVe IP via Google Voice - to another cell phone - I can hear them but they cannot hear me.
Have not done an extensive test to see if it is related to being on Edge/3g/4g when calling.

    Calling a land line works.
Echoing is a symptom that is still a puzzle to me, as I don't really understand all the technical jargon in the settings options.
But they can hear me fine and works well enough.

    ----

I will report back after receiving calls from land line and from cells via Google Voice.

As a followup, started this thread mainly to check for any issue unique to using GrooVe IP on T-Mobile prepaid.

I did check the FAQ and will double check the settings on the phone.

    another follow

Out of curiosity, made some test calls from the Exhibit II using my Skype account
Called a land line and cell.
The sound quality on the receiving end is crystal clear, both via wifi or Edge.

For some reason it is working a lot better than GrooVe IP, but I realize they serve difference purposes.

Disappointed GrooVe IP hasn't lived up to expectations after paying for the app.
Despite several settings changes, one constant is my voice is coming through distorted and scratchy or cuts off.

Interesting. I am not happy with groove ip either. Will give skype a try.

I have had the same experience with GV over T-mo 4G. Despite good ping times (<100ms) and good d/l u/l speeds, my voice is heard to be choppy or distorted or unintelligible.

GV does use G711 uLaw as the codec - there is no narrowband solution as yet. So, you need a good data provider as the connection will use about 100kb/s in each direction.

Try changing the Mic buffer to large or X-large and see if that helps.

Skype, OTOH, uses a proprietary codec which is narrowband - thus not as prone to network variances. I have had pretty good luck w/ Skype over T-mo 4G. Enough so I bought some credit to make calls @ 2.3c apiece.

    Thank you

    Grinner21:

Thank you for the technical information on how these services work.
I will try (again) your suggestion on the mic buffering and try several more tweaks.

GV itself works fine on the computer at home on DSL service.
And now I'm wondering if...a call can be made direct from GV to the phone via GrooVe IP.
Instead of a call being forwarded through GV and onto GrooVe IP.
(GV dialing the T-Mobile # would count against the voice minutes.)

Couple more attempts at tweaking settings and calling via GrooVe IP.
    No improvement.
Tried all the suggestions from the SNRB Labs FAQ.

Anyway, what the heck is this?
"Ensure UDP ports 19003 and 19004 are open. Those are the ports GrooVe IP uses for voice traffic"
Where do you access these settings?
    On the phone?
    Let me take a look...

The reference to those ports is when using Wi-Fi. Your router needs to forward those ports to your phone. As to your issue, in the "Troubleshooting" menu check "Audio Routing". This setting may fix your one way audio problem.

re - in the "Troubleshooting" menu check "Audio Routing".

    Thank you.
    I will try that.
Thought I looked at all the different settings but that one was not checked.
    Will report back after testing.

Ok...with Audio Routing checked, some improvement.
But voice quality is still fuzzy and not acceptable.
Been trying all levels of mic gain, up and down.
Test was on the house wifi, and I am not going to mess with port forwarding, etc.

Anyway, based on comments at the SNRB site, should not even consider using GrooVe IP on Edge.
And even with 3G/4G service, good call quality may not be a given.

About the only things left is testing it with the new tweaks in settings when I am picking up 4G signal.
    At home it's at Edge.

At home, do you have wifi? I'd recommend using that instead of cell data. I only use Groove IP over wifi and haven't had much problems.

Not sure what you mean, when you are using GV on your computer you are actually using Google talk through gmail. When using Groove IP, GV is still just forwarding to your Google talk. Also what phone are you using?

    Exhibit II.

I did not explain more clearly.
This is just to figure out the incoming calls via GrooVe IP by calling direct from Google Voice.

Instead of folks calling the Google Voice number from a phone/cell, which in turn is forwarded to the Exhibit II via GrooVe IP, is there a way for a call to be made direct from Google Voice/Talk and GrooVe IP receive that call?

Wanting to check for connection/call quality if that is possible.

Yes, you can do that. You will need to use a different Google account on each device.

re - You will need to use a different Google account on each device.

    Thank you.
    Not sure if I understand.
But I was probably over-thinking this.

Anyone calling direct from Google Voice (or is it Talk) would dial my Google Voice number, which in turn would forward to GrooVe IP on my cell.

Just want to test GrooVe IP incoming call quality by eliminating the cell phone as the origin on the other end.

The other caller would just need google talk setup on their end and then call you through gmail/gtalk.
