Sorry to get back on an old question, but i find it very difficult to walk around Akihabara without seeing a white rom shop - they seem to be everywhere! On the main strip (Chuo Doori) there are at least 4 that i can remember (walk into shop, see phones in glass cabinets), not to mention the Sofmap on the corner has a used phones section.

Yeah, after coming here again (typing this from an internet cafe in Akiba) I find that you're... right. White-ROM shops are all over the place. Just like every other time I came here (I've also got a 13% off voucher for the Sofmap usable with cash only for any purchase over 11500 yen). The main difference being that this time I don't have to buy train tickets to get here like other tourists anymore. Tap and go, and when it gets low, tap the "load" button to pop another couple thousand yen in from my credit card. This thing works great!

Well.... it's an advantage for us not having that technology (use phone to pay for "everything"). Why? .. well ... there are high chances getting the phone stolen. Luckly I don't need to use public transport; I use my car all the time, so bohoo for the thieves (?)

If we're going to be on THAT topic...

Once upon a time I was careless in Tokyo and left my SH-13C in a toilet stall in a Yodobashi Camera(on top of a baby seat-thing, not IN the toilet itself, thank heaven). I went back half an hour later and someone was inside. This someone came out, I went in, and there it was, nobody had even thought of stealing it.

Either they are brutally honest or they had something better than your SH-13C and didn't want it or they were just too lazy to take it knowing they had to copy their entire address book back in and it would be just too much effort in the end.

No its just not heard of here. Why risk getting traced/EMEI blocked/punished for taking a phone that you found? I watched some girl get off the train leaving her phone behind (by the time i had noticed, she was already out). The phone was sitting on the seat in front of me, and 2 young people sat down *around* the phone (like it might zap them). They looked at it, but didnt touch it. The next station a train conductor came on and picked it up (obviously the girl had reported it).

But thats not to say things never go missing here - my wife's old umbrella, which she had since junior high, went missing between 2 stations (we got off, realized, reported it, and by the time the train was at the next station it was gone). Its just that phones are too risky i think.

But you can bet he went through your messages
