Love how Google is making it out like they are so advanced with their NFC payment technology coming out now.

The biggest beef I have with NFC is that it's not fully FeliCa-compatible. Otherwise I'd be happily installing Google Wallet on my phone.

This morning, having just read this post, I rushed to catch the bus. Got on, the ticket person came, I reached for my wallet, opened it and realised I'd forgotten to put money in it. So I got off the bus, went back home, got some money and caught a taxi to work.

If only we could pay our bus tickets with our phones...

Out of curiosity, wouldn't the Nexus be usable in Japan as a paying device?

I've seen this video back when I have my N73 and was using Symbian OS.

The Nexus has an "American" standard NFC chip while Japanese phones have a FeliCa chip. Not sure, probably wrong.

No it isnt, because the NFC standard that Android is pushing is different to the Felica standard.

The actual transfer of data is the same (so theoretically sending links etc via BEAM should work), but the authentication part (required for financial transactions) is handled by a separate chip in the Japanese phones (which means the identity is tied to the phone). The Google NFC is handled by an application that runs on the sim card, which means that phone providers will be able to charge you by the month for having a "NFC enabled SIM"

Docomo is working on merging the technologies though, so future Saifu-keitai enabled phones will work on NFC without requiring separate security chips

Don't docomo phones also have apps that utilise different parts of the FeliCa chip? My SH-07B has an ANA and some transport one.

Damn, there goes my plan of looking like a local by paying with my phone during my visit to Japan this January.

Yes, there are quite a few different companies offering services through the felica (nfc) chip - ANA mileage, Shinkansen train tickets, Yodobashi point cards etc. But pretty sure they all require the security authentication - hence why Nexus users can only use Toruca in Japan (thats a data transmission service - put the phone next to a toruca enabled ad to receive a link/file about that product). Too bad i havent really seen that anywhere!

I've seen several of these NFC enabled billboards, mostly in malls (one was the Lalaport in Toyosu). There's usually a telly next to the scanner displaying an ad (scan your phone, receive the link to the company shown in the TV) or a promotion (scan your phone, get a 10% off QR code or something like that).

And I've already got Mobile Suica on my SH-13C and 3000 yen loaded. Step off the plane and onto the train, no need to buy a ticket like the other tourists!

Which reminds me, I need to buy an Android keitai for my trip to Tokyo later this month. Used 007SH or new SH-01D? I need to look like a local too!
