I am currently using a 3gs that is version 4.3.3 and on the 05.16.02 baseband. There is a NEW unlock out (Ultrasn0w 1.2.5) that works on 5.0.1 devices, but would require me to update to the ipad baseband. Would you guys recommend I update to this, or wait for a compatible unlock solution? I updated to the ipad baseband for a previous iphone 3g phone, and it kind of messed up my iphone: it runs really slow and the GPS doesn't work and stuff. I'm not sure if waiting around is worth it either. What you guys say?
You should just upgrade to iPad baseband. I think they stop working on 3GS unlocks. They are more focused on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s unlock and untethered jailbreak. So there really is no point of waiting in my opinion.
When I got my 3GS, it was on iOS 5.0.1 and BB: 6.15.00
What I want to do with it doesn't require moving it to another carrier, such as T-mobile.
So, I think the iPad baseband is about the worst thing you could do to the phone.
Put it on Straight Talk or sell it and get a better one, but don't screw up another iPhone with 6.15.
Something on mine is causing massive battery drain.
Think it's the baseband, but some jailbreaking sites still say to use 6.15, and don't warn of any problems.
I even put in a new (and higher capacity) battery.
It helped, but proved the original battery wasn't at fault.
About 12..13 hours with all radios off, airplane mode, no GPS, no wifi, no bluetooth, screen blanked, on original battery.
Around 15..16 hours with the new 1600 mah battery.
The iPhone 4 I'm experimenting with is much better.
I suspect a stock 3GS would be , too, on any other baseband
If someone wants to recreate my test, it's from 100% battery, down to 20% charge, and check every two hours.

I'm glad I stumbled into this thread. I saved up my nickels and dime for factory unlocked 4S.
But I also have my 3GS that I am looking to sell. It in great condition. But I was seeing all over that they fetch a higher price unlocked. So I was going to do the iPad base band on it and sell it. But this seem to be terrible idea as I wish the new owner to have a good experience.
The battery on my jail broken 5.0.1 3GS is good. With everything turned off but the phone radio it will go for days idling for calls.
My question then is how do I fetch an equal price as all those crappy iPad base band phones because the consumers seen to be looking for unlocks?
Well, I finally got my 3GS to run for days, too.
I downgraded the iOS to ver 4.3 (and baseband 6.15)

It's in the Phone department, and called: Power Drain iPhone: SOLVED
So, if it's a trade off between an iOS 5 family or days (vs hours) of battery life, I'll take days, thank you!
Just educate the new buyer that his best solution is Straight Talk.
And so no unlock is actually required.
