    Strength of signal, I believe. The more green, the better the signal. I could be wrong, though.

    Thanks Sweeper....now that you mentioned it I recall that the icon is green at home where the sig is strong but when I'm out and about like Panera Bread it's white. I guess because the sig is weaker. Makes sense. Thanks again.

    This is a new feature introduced in the Gingerbread version of Android. Green means you are connected to Google's cloud services. If the indicators are not green, syncing contacts, calendar, GMail and other Google services will fail. Also some apps paid using Android Market might fail to authenticate the license when the signal indicators are white instead of green.

    The more I see my mom's Avail, the more I like it. It's no Galaxy S but for $130 no-contract, it doesn't have to! If ZTE and AT&T released a version of the Avail with a sliding keyboard for $200 or less without downgrading any spec in the process, I'll definitely buy one for me.

    hey guys,

    kinda confused here..I went to Radio Shack to pick up an Avail, I told the sales guy I didn't plan on buying a data plan for now, I was just going to do the $25/month plan & use wifi with it to get apps, etc. Salesguy said that was not possible to do! that a data plan is required with the Avail in order to use the internet and get 3G..is he right or wrong? So you don't get 3G without a data plan? I thought I had it all figured out, and he totally confused me. Any help appreciated.

    He is wrong. He probably was thinking in the postpaid phone mentality, where a data plan is indeed required. In Go Phone, a data plan is not required though you won't be able to use pay-per-use data on the Avail -- either buy data package or live in a WiFi-only world.

    I agree with CeluGeek that the Radio Shack guy was wrong. I have an Avail GoPhone without a data plan ($2 unlimited use for every day I talk ), but I have 3G access whenever I'm away from my home wi-fi.

    BTW, AT&T has LOUSY customer service for GoPhones. If you dial 611 you will fall into a maddening automated response maze and it's very hard to find a live person. For all questions related to my phone or service I always go an actual AT&T store (not Radio Shack or a box store!), where I've found the people to be great to deal with.

    I agree with VAbirdwoman......dialing 611 gets you an automated menu that usually has nothing to do with what you want. I found that if you say the word "representative" instead of one of their choices it puts you through to a live person. Of course, it's a hit and miss to get a person that can actually help you in a timely manner. I also agree that visiting an actual AT&T store can be more productive. They will bend over backward to try and help you.

    I can't remember if I said "representative" or dialed zero, but I was able to reach an actual person on the 611 CS line earlier this month.

    If I get this phone can I just use the wifi and not pay for data since most of what I want is when I am at home.

    The reason I chose GoPhone was mainly because it's the only provider I could find that doesn't require a data package for service. You can use all the other services (phone, text, wifi, bluetooth, etc) without having to pay for data that you may or may not use. I use wifi almost exclusively. I have a small amount of data in reserve just in case I need it. Only costs $5 a month to keep it active.
