Somehow I don't see this sort of thing happening, what with them turning a profit on their mobility sector. I could see a larger buyout, perhaps... but until there is some solid info, I would assume this is idle chatter.
I also couldn't see MTS selling off the mobility sector because why would they sell off one of their most profitable portions of the company? People did rumour that there was always a possibility of Rogers buying out MTS one day.
The Allstream division has been on the selling block for a long time now, it hasn't been a cash cow for them.
I would believe this I just speculation, I had heard back in July that Rogers may be poking around the idea of purchasing MTS wireless. But I will not believe it until I see some more factual information. MTS is not to bad the way they are right now, just lacking phone selection, but really if you know enough on the exact phone your after, you should just buy one unlocked and off contract.
But MTS is a telco. Why would MTS sell mobility to a cableco like Rogers, the likes of which it competes with (Shaw)? More likely Bell or Telus will buy it.
Rogers already has an agreement with MTS, especially with the HSPA network, so it would work better for them to buy it.
Not sure though. It Telus buys MTS, then Rogers would have an agreement to roam on Telus towers. Because the HSPA towers for MTS and Rogers are the same.
Something to consider. MTS mobility has two parts one is cellular the other is mobile radio. Cellular is profitable and Mobile radio is not? in the next couple of years their major supplier (Motorola) is going to stop supporting the system they have now because Motorola now has newer systems that will not work with the current technology they have. Guess what they are trying to sell ? if you think support on cellular is bad try getting something complicated resolved with the Mobile Radio side of MTS.

He's talking about their Fleetnet system. It's how we talk to 911 and ambulance and whatnot with our fire department. I believe it's how all EMS in Manitoba communicates (outside of Winnipeg anyway).
I think you can subscribe to it to use it for different stuff too. But I believe it's pretty expensive.
He is likely referring to FleetNet that runs Motorola truck tracking systems for fire and ems and many other companies such as MB hydro. It uses the 800mhz band and communicate on specific control channels.
