I have two lines on my Tmobile account. I'm switching one line to AT&T.
The Tmobile tower signal isn't strong enough to provide service inside my girlfriend's brick-lined apartment.
For the past two years, she's used a wifi phone and router to receive "reception." Without that combo, she would receive no service. She would have to go out on the patio or outside into the parking lot to get a tower signal.
Long story-short, she sometimes loses internet service, has a router glitch, or her phone (Nokia 7510) has connection problems. Too many variables... and I'm uncomfortable when her phone goes directly to voice mail for any of the aforementioned problems.
AT&T gets reception in all areas of her apt, but only 1 bar. Is 1 bar a secure enough to make the switch? Should I be looking at Verizon instead, which tends to have even better coverage?
Removing her number from my plan means that I have to find a new classic or value plan.
The Go Phone minutes are $50 for unlimited talk and text, but do not include data. Would I be able to retain my old grandfathered TZones if I switched to a Go Phone until I found a new classic or value plan?

$50 T-Mobile monthly prepaid plan it has unlimited internet at 2G speeds with the first 100 MB at 4G speeds. You would lose Tzones for good as soon as you leave your postpaid plan.
If you talk to them in advance, the retention department may permit you to switch to an on individual postpaid plan that would be compatible with your tzones. But only that department could switch you to that, not regular customer service.

Ported the TMobile number to AT&T today and had service within minutes.
Called TMO to let them know I was porting the one number. A woman tried to talk me out of it by offering a new product that brings the signal outside the window inside the home (a new hotspot type of gadget that doesn't require internet -- but it does require electricity, which brings back the same situation -- a power outage means no cell phone service). The rep plans to call me tomorrow to see what plan I can switch to.
My number is out of contract and I want to keep it that way. It's too easy to buy cheap, unlocked phones on Amazon now. I may make myself conveniently unavailable to give myself time to assess my options. TMO had already been calling me to offer their $10 off plans for a year, etc.
One problem. My monthly refresh occurred today. Had I ported the number yesterday, it would have been a clean cut. I now have to pay an extra month for that number, which really sucks. Perhaps retentions can fix that?
I'm really liking the idea of prepaid plans in that there are no extra taxes and hidden fees. Just a flat $50/month.
A member of the boards said I could go with Straight Talk, which offers unlimited everything with 3G speeds through ATT for $35 -- in which case I wouldn't need TZones. (But are those 3G speeds unthrottled?) He said I could transfer my TZones to him. I didn't even know you could do that.
I could basically cut the bill for two lines down to $100 even every month (I currently pay close to $140/month after taxes and fees now.)
I'm thinking of the Monthly 4G $50 plan, but 100 MB of 4G is nothing. I'm guessing it drops to Edge speeds. If it drops to 3G speeds, I could live with that.

It hasn't been that simple with Straight Talk because they want you to only use their phones. Some people were buying a certain phone they sell for $200 and then taking the SIM card out and activating it on another phone. I haven't been following it lately, but you can find out the details on the Straight Talk forum.

Some reports are that it drops down to even lower to GPRS speeds (60kbps).
Tele,
I am the one who messaged you. just a few more observations.

the 50 dollar plan includes unlimited data for at&t feature phones or NON at&t smartphones.
by offering a new product that brings the signal outside the window inside the home ( a new hotspot type of gadget that doesn ' t require internet - - but it does require electricity ,which brings back the same situation - - a power outage means no cell phone service) .
you could plug this more signal device into an u p s backup battery.

Actually 45 dollars per month .
( But are those 3G speeds unthrottled?)
straight talk never throttles but some uses have reported receiving phone calls from straight talk regarding access data usage . straight talk won't say what do usage is acceptable but the consensus in the straight talk subforum is two gigabytes per month is safe.
He said I could transfer my TZones to him . I didn ' t

You can call t mobile customer service or talk with 1 of the t mobile reps here on howard forums about that . As far as I know tzones is the only data plan from tmobile that does not have throttling. yes I would-be pleased to have tzones if you are getting rid of it.
I' m looking to upgrade from my Nuron , as well . Any good ideas.
since you are already acclimated to the symbian operating system why not purchase the nokia e 71 from straight talk . the refurb is only 50 dollars on straight talk . it has 3g data and wifi . great deal on a great phone. if you want to use a different phone purchase 1 of the 3 nokia's straight talk sells and use the sim card

I want to say you were fine staying with TMobile given that the Nokia 7510 was only 2g phone. Did you ever try a 3g Tmobile phone to see if she got better reception? I know quite a few people who had 2g only phones switch to a 3g phone on TMobile and that made a world of difference for them.

I have TMO service + a Nokia Nuron (5230), which is a 3G phone, and no dice.
I have to leave the phone on the dining room table by her windows to get a signal. Even then, it switches back and forth between 2-3 3G bars and 1-2 bars of Edge service.
I make calls and texts with the phone on the table. If I pick up the phone to put it to my ear, I lose signal.
She's had the AT&T service for a week now and she loves it. She gets 2-3 bars in every room in the house, and gets 1-2 bars in the bathroom with the door closed (the room furthest from the windows).
AT&T provides a consistent and solid signal with no reliance on other devices.
The manager I spoke to at Radio Shack mentioned the company switched their phones from TMobile to AT&T. He says the coverage area is larger, but that TMO's 4G network is far superior. She's about making phone calls and texts, not 4G, so it's fine.
We also like that prepaid doesn't have any additional taxes and fees, it's a true $50/month. All things considered, it's hard to beat what she now has.
The new ZTE Z221 gets as good a signal as her Nokia backup phone.

Hey there, TMOCustomer!
While my girlfriend had to leave TMO out of need, I still like TMO. I like GSM call quality and the variety of phones (tho ATT is pretty much the same).
I've been with TMO since '04/'05 and like the fringe benefits -- like $4.99 TZones with unthrottled data, even if I eventually choose a 4G plan. (Can you have both concurrently?)
I think I'll go with a No Annual Contract 4G plan. I only talk about 300-400/month, so I may just go with the $30/month 1500 minutes/texts and try to keep my TZones to go with that, if it's allowed.
If I need something heavier, I can switch at the end of the month.
...All that said, a few things about TMO...
The main benefit of TMO 5 years ago was the cheap plans with a ton of minutes.
Now that everyone is offering unlimited Pre-paid or pay-as-you go plans for cheap (to stay competitive with the prepaid market), TMO has lost a little edge, which is why you see the Best. Plan. Ever. They win by undercutting the competition, which is getting harder to do.
What TMO has going for it is its superior 4G network and continued excellent customer service.
So for those who don't have need for media rich phones, TMO may not be the cheapest bet nowadays.
For example, the TMO $50/month unlimited plan, under the No Annual Contract 4G section, only provides 100MB of 4G speeds, then it drops to 2G speeds. That's barely having 4G speeds at all. You're better off having consisent, unthrottled 3G speeds.
Now that I'm hip to Pay As You Go plans, contract plans are a turnoff. All kinds of fees and taxes make their way onto your bill and unlocked phones are easier than ever to get. Getting a free or discounted phone only to be locked down for 2 years isn't worth it. Everyone knows it's best to stay out of contact, anyway....
I'm still loyal to TMO, but the benefits are getting less and less, at the moment.
I also heard from the Radio Shack rep that the ATT acquisition of TMobile isn't over. He said they backed out of it because of the FCC involvement, but were already making plans to go about it another means.
You are correct prepaid is a better deal for most people. The 1500 minute prepaid plan is great if you can live with 30mb of data. No unlimited tzones on prepaid plan but read the prepaid thread for captain smokeys workaround. If you stay in solid coverage you might try tmobile's other 30 plan the 100 minute, unlimited text, 5gb data plan and use a voip solution like Skype or groove IP.
Please let me know if you decide to go prepaid and give up your tzones. I would be grateful to have it

I suppose I could switch to a prepaid plan then switch to the business plan once I incorporate -- although the rep mentioned tonight that a Sole Proprietership could be linked to a soc sec number, so maybe there's a way in the door now?
Of course, there's the AT&T Go Plan with unlimited everything at 3G speeds for $50/month flat.
Is there way for Tmobile to tell me my data usage? My counters on my phone are for overall data usage, and I can't tell how much I average in one month. I use bus tracker websites and Goggle Maps GPS often.
Last, if I do give over my TZones, how do I go about doing so?
I would keep your one of the grandfathered plans with tzones if you're staying with T-mobile. .
You can see your total data usage by going in your account where they itemize the usage for data. On the last page of the itemization, they list how much data that you've used.
Also, I think it used to show data usage on the bill summary each month.
I have tzones and I've never gotten the #932# code to work. It comes back with a message that "this service is not available for your account type"
Likewise... It's never worked for me.... The only way I can check is to go online and page forward to the last page of data usage...
Note: I'm a BzzAgent - I get to try stuff and let people know about it. You can ask me questions about it and I'll give honest feedback not advertising fluff...
