By taking no phone, I believe the penalty is 10% of MSF X months remaining up to $50; plus the $12.50 SDF
That sounds about right re: what I was told. I have no "penalty" to pay for a phone since I didn't take 1. Sure they tried to get me to get but I kept repeating that I have no use for a new phone. Finally it seemed to work.
^ I was thinking, if you don't hup, and just want to renew the contract (obviously for the purpose of the new cancellation rules), can they refuse to do that?

Would you please clarify the benefit(s) esp. financial to you by renewing contract with no HUP? Thanks!

If they were to let you do this, then your new term would be covered by the new cancelation policies, meaning much lower termination fees if you have no HUP on the renewal. It is unlikely to work with Fido, since they stack contracts, meaning at the very least your old contract would still carry the same termination clauses you were under previously. With Rogers, since they terminate your old agreement upon renewal, this would have the advantage of effectively wiping out your old obligations.

Has ceredon answered your question? Or did you mean to ask why, other than to take advantage of the new cancellation rules, would anyone want to renew without a hup? Well, some people renew to get more credits, or to assure continuation of existing credits.
Just called in to change my long distance add on in sig to the $5 - 100 LD minute one, and well I inquired about my ECF as well. The rep was completely confused as to what ECF fees I'm under. She gave me $450 + tax for the old ECF policy, and $180 + $360 because I have 18 months left on my contract. She had no idea what my cancellation fees are, and how to calculate them.

That's exactly it. Too keep your credits. Only reason I did it. Had I been able to stay month to month with my existing credits I wouldn't have resigned a contract.

It's likely because you're still on a contract so I would assume the new "rules" would only kick in once your original contract is done.
In my case my contract had expired the day the new rules kicked in. I lucked out!
