Can I get an iPhone 4 w/ no data plan on AT&T? ...

I've got a 4S with data on AT&T. The rest of the family is on a family plan with Sprint, all feature phones with no data.

I'm considering switching my daughter to AT&T with me on a family plan there. I see Best Buy is offering the iPhone 4 for free w/ a 2 year activation. I really don't want to spend the money on a data plan for her now.

Is it possible to get her the iPhone 4 on AT&T, via Best Buy, and not get a data plan? Then I could just turn off cell data from within the phone, and it would still work for data within a WiFi area? And of course work as a phone on the AT&T network?

    Thanks VERY much in advance,
    Chris

Unfortunately not. You'd be required to add at least the $15 plan to the line.
My opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinions of my employer AT&T.

No. If its a smart phone, it will have a data plan. They will trow her on the $15 a month data plan which she is likely to go over.

Any retail AT&T susidized smartphone requires a minimum $15.00 data plan. FYI, my Best Buy is offering the 3GS for free- $99.00 for the 4.

The only way to use an iPhone on at&t's network without a data plan is to put it on their prepaid gophone service. $50 for unlimited everything (including data), but data will not work on a smartphone unless a data package is purchased (but not required), and you won't use your anytime minutes talking to each other with mobile to mobile.

You're probably thinking of iPhone 3G [S], iPhone 4 is still $99 with 2-year contract. And no, as others have stated, you cannot use any iPhone on AT&T postpaid without a data plan, but you can use it on AT&T prepaid without a data plan.

Best Buy is offering a special (12/30 and 12/31) where you buy an iPhone 4 32GB, and get one free. This might be what he is referring to.

AT&T'll still send you the bill for voice and data.

They will IMEI sweep in 90% of cases. Theres people who do get away with using an iPhone without a data plan (make sure to turn the data off), but its few. My friend gave his old iPhone 3GS to his mother (on same family plan) and his mother has been using it for over 3 months without getting the data plan forced on her. In 2010, I tried using a 3GS with data off and a data block on my account and I got swept every month; I did it for 3 months, just swapped the SIM back to a dumbphone and called in to remove the data plan, worked each month until I decided it wasnt worth the hassle and stopped.

He is talking about not having service with a company at all. Using WiFi for Data and an internet based service like Google Voice or Skype for Voice.

In that case, wouldn't be easier to buy an iPod instead???

The person to whom you replied was replying to the suggestion that the original poster use Wi-Fi only.
