I really like Mobilicity, or rather, really want to like Mobilicity. I'm a big fan of the "no credit check" model that they innovated, I love the my wallet feature, and the whole philosophy of the company. I have been a Mobi subscriber for a year, and I've always been pretty happy about the concept.
The reality on the ground has been different for me, and the #1 reason why is lack of PATH coverage.
So, with the Wind HMP offering a similar level of service I decided to give it a try. I thought I would run both for a month and then cancel whichever one was worse. I figured that would mean I would not be able to keep my number--maybe--but I wasn't prepared to walk away that quick.
Well it took less than 24 hours for me to realize that the service on WIND in my area isn't just a little better, it is a whole lot better. I realize it's different for people in other places, but I spend a lot of my time in the PATH, and while WIND coverage in the PATH is not the same as Robelus deliver, they actually HAVE service. With mobi anywhere I got service in the PATH was more by accident than by design.
Data speeds are also not just a little bit faster, but a LOT faster. For the first time ever I was able to watch a movie on netflix. Not that I will do that often--but it just worked. I never successfully did that with mobi.
I tried a few voice calls and overall I was satisfied with the experience. Mobilicity's call quality is absolutely better, but honestly the differences are cosmetic. The noises I could hear on my WIND line did not in any way interfere with my ability to have a clear conversation.
The other thing I will really miss, besides the wonderful wallet concept, is that Mobi has really fair and competitive overseas rates. I didn't use it that often, but it struck the right chord with me that the company was offering fair pricing even in areas most people would overlook.
At the end of the day, though, for someone like me who lives in downtown Toronto, after complaining about it in every way I could, to customer service, on the forums, via emails, there has been no progress on the PATH issue, and there is no sign that there is going to be any progress. Maybe later this year. Maybe. I really have waited a year for it, and that really just out of good will.
WIND's plan is fundamentally similar to what I had from mobi, and the service is just plain better in my area.
Sorry, I'm really sad to go.
