I recently came upon the Cowboom site selling the HTC Incredible I. That's how I learned about PagePlus. I have not received the phone yet. My question is: is that a simple tutorial/procedure to root, droidwall, titaniumbackup the phone ?
Yes it was 2.3.4. The process is fairly quick and relatively painless. Just be sure to read and re-read the instructions. I downloaded everything before I started and checked the md5 sums (that is an important step.) I had one minor problem. After I downgraded to 2.2, my wireless would not turn on. I asked a question in the forum and I was told to install a different rom. I did that using the following link and now the phone is perfect: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1260994. That was very easy to install as well.
I have a really stupid question. This is my first smart phone. I bought the HTC Incredible at the recommendation of some of you. I see the comments about rooting. Do I HAVE to do that to make it work with PPC? If so do I do it before or after I do my ESN switch to that phone?

Most of the plans on PP have very limited data amounts (or very expensive data rates). So make sure you know how much data the plan you are going to get has and how much data you might expect to use based on your usage. Reading a lot of older threads here can help you figure that out.
I just got an Inc 2 weeks ago and I'd recommend you root it and install Droid Wall to control data use. I wasn't on top of the way the phone works when I got it and burned up the $40 I had on paygo in 1 night while it was trying to download the GB update in the backround.

As others have stated, you do not HAVE to root the phone. But the proactive data usage statuses and monitoring of the usage is much easier with tools that can only be used on rooted phones. If you have plenty of places wifi is available, and you have at least one of the monthly plans that comes with enough data for your still unknown amount of usage, you could try the phone without rooting. I started out with a Droid 2 Global, applied a standard card pin I had and used a few dollars each day, even with the 3G data turned off and only using wifi. I then applied a 1200 Talk n Text plan and still was not sure of the monthly data I would be burning through once I turned 3G back on. I rooted and did the Droidwall and 3G Watchguard apps to see exactly how much data I use.
Remember that monthly plans have capability of having a balance on the account if you go over your usage in 1 area, but the standard plan pins end up being a very expensive 3G data option (as someone pointed out burning though $ very fast because of the price per MB.

Same thing happened to me, I used up all of my $10 card in a few hours when the phone was trying to download some Verizon stuff in the background. I rooted it, istalled Droidwall and have had no problems since. I know exactly how much data I have used (through the PP website, or using 3g Watchdog)

Oh, and don't forget... inbound calls on landlines are free and unlimited, except when you accept a collect call of course. The ~$24/month (may have gone up to ~$26- can't remember at the moment) landline at my house has free unlimited local outbound calls and I can use my Google Voice number to make free outbound long distance calls.
I have a Droid 2 Global.. The phone has option of disabling background data, "data plan saver", and option of disbling data altogether... when I load an app, I do not allow automatic updates..
So far, without rooting, it has been fine for me..

Yes, that will work as one way to limit 3G data- if you do not want or need to send any MMS text messages which can't be sent without having 3G data turned on.

Not all telephone companies offer free inbound calls on their landlines, so your statement is not universally true for everyone out there. Our local telephone company offers metered telephone or a higher priced unlimited talk option that does not bill per minute of usage (similar to cell phones lower priced vs all you care to use for a much higher rate).
