I have been following this forum since 3 yrs though, i just registered recently, The Forums now looks less lively that it was years back, why is it so? I want regular those years but still, now i find some thing lacking here!
I think its just natural with time. Back in the day this was the place to go for everything phone related. Now with so many forums specifically dedicated to your phone of choice I think that it has less activity. Its still a great place though.
I have noticed this too. I'm about to enter into my eighth year on HoFo and it does feel a lot different. Too many subforums have created a sense of confinment, a bunch of smaller groups that don't get to interact too much outside of their closed circles. You don't get to talk to many HoFo'ers unless you happen to have the exact same phone as them. Even The Lounge is not seeing too much activity! I also noticed a lot more spam lately visible for longer before it is removed. Not enough mods, or not enough users to report the spam to the mods?

I've been wondering the same thing. I believe that the wireless market is becoming more "mature". Not the customers; the market. There's really less to discuss. The iPhone has been beat to death. Also, the moderators keep some of the incendiary activity down to a dull roar. Maybe everyone is just too busy playing "Angry Birds".

Yeah, it has died down a lot.
Some of the old hacks don't post anymore, rarely bother or got axed for stupid stuff.
I'm sure a good lot of those Hofo'ers moved beyond phones or wireless stuff into different hobbies and/or just too busy to come by to read and post.
I'm one of those who moved on to different things, phones and wireless stuff had it's appeal (e.g. like flashing firmware or finding out what to get next) back in the day but now it isn't something that wows me anymore. The current devices I own aren't significantly different from the ones that are coming out or the fast networks themselves these days is pretty much widespread.
Still better than the days when trolls ruled the forums.
The oldies probably dont post anymore because they all have iphones or droids. I remember cruzin these boards for hacks for a v600. Treos. Old school blackberries.
Ah the gold ole days

This. OS dedicated forums and device dedicated forums have attracted people. I still surf hofo from time to time, but am mostly on 2-3 other dedicated forums when it comes to wireless. Also, people moving on to other hobbies as previously stated plays a big roll. I spend more time on a couple of Jeep related forums than anything, now.
I think with the US finally getting smart phones the need to get an unlocked phone from over seas wasn't all that in demand, for example I was hardcore Japanese cellphone user, cause there phones were (and still is) crazy cool, I needed Howard forums to help me configure those phones to work in the US and to also see what's new. But now that the us kinda caught up I find myself no longer needing an unlocked phone (unless I really wanted it) to be using Howard forums. I still read and post occasionally whenever I see fit..

I agree with all the points mentioned here. I have long since been a lurker and have used hofo as a resource for many years, until just recently registering. I agree with the cell phone market maturing. It feels like several years ago the cell market was very new, and there were tons of phone models and manufacturers out there. Back then I would purchase a phone, and still know of another 8-10 models I wanted to try out and play with. It was fun and exciting trying out all the different phones and OSes. Nowadays it feels like everything has already been figured out and there are a lot less choices. There is less "hacking" to do to phones, and now generally everything is pretty straight forward, IMO.
edit: I think somehow reducing the amount of individual forums would make the place more lively, if possible. Seems like I only like to look into 2-3 sections and there is many I will never look at.
Have also wondered where some have gone, I have been on here a long time and used to always see someone on that I know, but for a while now, just seems slow. I want the old days back too! =)
