The 4s does not have better reception than the photon. This is sounding likea my Iphone is better than yours post.Leaving the antenna exposed on the external casing is a bad idea and will be changed on the next generation phone. The phone looks dated with its little 3.5 inch display now obsolete by todays larger screens. It has a smallish internal battery coupled with a faster chip yields so so battery life.Apple has tried to fix this issue with little success. This is a known issue. The photon is cheaper and a great device.Much better value.
I think it really comes down to user preference.
not i-sheep
Both have excellent reception. Both are good choices. Really comes down to what the customer prefers.
Apple DID fix this. Again, your ignorance and bias blind you.
I am personally an Android user... but I think it is very silly to say one is better than the other when neither phone (Photon or iPhone 4s) have any SERIOUS short comings when it comes to reception/call quality (which was the OP's question).
Hold your horses! I just returned the iphone 4S due to way too many dropped calls in many areas of my sales territory here in N. California. I went with all the iphone hype and after using it for almost 3 weeks, it went back. When a good signal, call quality was excellent, however, anything less than full bars gave me lots of "sorry, missed that, say it again" from me and callers. Guess I was expecting too much from this phone, but call quality was definitely lacking. Setting this phone up is a pain too..iTunes? Really? Siri? Really? Lots of unnecessary gimmicks imo. Sorry, just not a Apple convert. And after reading about Apple's very stingy corporate charity giving, I don't support them at all.
Btw, ended up going with the EVO 4g..all working well going on week 2 (here in Ca. we have a 30 trial period). If any dropped/poor quality calls, I will try the Photon. Thanks for the heads up on the Moto.
No problem, good luck with the evo... I would caution you that you are buying a very old product at this point.. The evo is 2 years old, and you are getting a much better phone/ bang for your buck with the photon.
I am still using a Droid Incredible 1, even though its not the latest and greatest because its a great phone.
Thanks to all for the assistance. I took my wife into the Sprint store, and she ultimately decided on the 4S--for no other real reason than that she has small hands, and the iPhone fit her better than the larger Photon. (I have big hands, so the bigger the better for me [EVO 4G for now; hoping someday for a 10" tablet with a built-in cell phone ], but she is the one who has to live with it for the next 2 years, so she should get what she wants [within reason]... Plus all her girlfriends have iPhones.)
I assume Sprint still has a 14- or 30-day exchange policy, so I'll make sure she tries it in all the potential "dead" spots in our area during that exchange period just to be sure.

Glad it worked out. Let us know what she thinks of the iPhone and the network.
A couple days in after activation, and she's pretty happy with it. I had her test reception in one of the occasionally "dead' areas she drives for her business, and it seemed good--no drops, clipping, or cutouts. There are a couple other sketchy reception areas she drives that I will have her test in next, and I'll report back.
So far, she's very happy--been downloading apps right and left.
On a related topic: the Sprint folks say there is only one type of "insurance" for the 4S--Apple Care (I think it's called). Is this true? I.e. no kind of TEP to be purchased for the 4S?
If I've correctly parsed the actual information out of the Sprint rep's sales pitch, it sounds like we pay $100 just to extend the Apple warranty for an extra year--IOW, no loss/damage protection. Is this really all there is for iPhone?
Built in warranty is 90 days phone tech support and a one year warranty in store.
AppleCare+ extends phone tech support and in store warranty coverage for 2 years. It also adds 2 years of coverage for a cracked screen and other forms of abuse with a $50 deductible per incident.
There is no coverage for loss or theft available through sprint or apple.

Final report: she is very happy with the iPhone. I've had her make calls in all the iffy reception areas where she travels, and it seems to hold RF well, and has good call quality. Since she is small, the smaller size of the iPhone (versus the Photon) fits her hand better.
She did purchase the Apple Care+ insurance.
And she is thoroughly addicted to "Words with Friends".
