Hi All,
I know the MTS Unlimited Data doesn't include tethering BUT I have heard that they are unable to track usage when you turn an unlocked android device into a wifi hotspot and access it that way. Anyone have experience with this? Is this the case?
Yes, as far as my experience goes...
Yes if you do have your Android phone rooted and do have the WiFi Hotspot app installed, MTS wont pick it up. I used 1GB of data through the hotspot and I didnt get charged on my bill, it showed up as normal usage
I know they can't track it on CDMA (confirmed with MTS Rep), but I'm wondering about 4G.
No, they can't track it yet on the new network either... mind you, I'm not sure they care, as long as you keep your total data used to a reasonable amount. I've never tethered more than 2GB in a month, except for the time my phone line was down at home due to a storm... I tethered closer to 3GB in a week that time!
MTS can track tethered data on "4G". Your tethered computer/iPad/whatever will show a different IP address on the network. Unless you jailbreak your phone...
Be warned: MTS unlimited means something different than you might think because they just changed their policies. If you hit their limit (now 15GB on the "4G" network), you will suffer with barely faster than dial-up speeds for the next 30 days 24/7. Just so you know...
On an interesting side note. I have always tethered with my Android heavily and never had a problem. The way MTS tracks tethered data is through a second IP or APN to the phone not a second device IP. On Iphones you have a second IP or APN connection, thethered data is routed through the second APN. Traditionally Android only used the one AP ever and all data regardless would route through the same APN. I have been running Jellybean and noticed that it not only finds and programs the MTS APN it also adds the second tethered MTS apn.
Hey where are you looking on your phone to see the second APN? I would like to see if my Android running JB is detecting the second APN while tethered. I only see the one if I go to settings -≥ more -≥ mobile networks -≥ access point names.
