I'm currently a Rogers prepaid customer and am finally wanting to upgrade to a smartphone and was considering the Google Nexus as it looks like it is now available for sale ($599).
Doing some math, since I'm a low voice/SMS user it seems that prepaid is still the right option for me to stay on even having to pay full price for the device. I usually buy a $100 voucher on Rogers which expires after 12 months but usually get around 9 months before my balance gets used up so costs me roughly $10/month. I would also be a fairly light data user so might be able to get away with the 100MB data add-on for $10/month. So essentially I would be paying $20/month and get call display + voice mail included which you can't beat on a post-paid account.
Even if you took the cheapest $15/month post-paid plan on Fido, added $10/month for CD+VM and took the $10 data add-on, after a 3 year period you would be shelling out $1260. On prepaid, in that same period I would be paying $747. I doubt the small $15/month FIDO plan counts for a phone discount so that would save $513, so still cheaper even if you did get a discount.
Since I'm not used to Fido's prepaid service, first, can you still buy a $100 voucher on FIDO with a 1 year expiry and if yes does it give you anything extra besides the longer expiry time? With Rogers it lets you pick a better rate ($0.25/min then $0.15/min after 5 mins).
Second, it looks like one benefit of Fido is free incoming SMS, but you pay slight more at $0.30/min, and if you want more data $25 gets you 500MB on Fido whereas it is only 250MB on Rogers.
Are there any other differences using a phone on Fido compared to Rogers, the coverage area is the same right and do you have access to the HSPA+ data network?
Is there anything else that I'm missing or not thinking about to get a decent low-voice + data plan with a Google Nexus? Will Fido just let be buy a Nexus at full price and put it on pre-paid?
We do offer a $100 voucher with a 365 days expiry period. That being said, you will have the same regular rate: $0.30/minute and $0.20/outgoing text message. As you noted, incoming text messages are free and unlimited anywhere in the world (even while roaming).
If you want a lower rate, you can always opt for a by-the-day or by-the-month prepaid plans, according to your needs. Similar to a monthly plan, a charge is deducted from the prepaid account every month. For more information about these plans, visit: www.fido.ca/prepaid
Because we share our network with Rogers, you get access to the same Canada-wide coverage. To get a better idea, you can go to this link: www.fido.ca/coverage
For your information, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is currently available for $600 in any participating Fido store. There is no problem for you to go to any Fido store and purchase a brand new Galaxy Nexus to use with your Fido prepaid service. To find the closest Fido store: www.fido.ca/storelocator
I hope this will help you make the best decision for your needs.
