Trick to charging N8 by USB with without using computer USB port?
Is there some special trick to charge an N8 with a 12V generic car charger or non-computer USB charge port using a USB cable?
I've got 2 cigarette lighter chargers and have tried multiple USB cables and none seem to charge my N8 by USB. They all charge my different Blackberries ok.
When I travel I use a Belkin travel surge protector that has 2 USB ports for charging phones and they work for my Blackberry ok but doesn't work for the N8.
My N8 charges ok by computer USB and I can charge it by USB port with my Blackberry chargers.
Is there some trick to get an N8 to charge by non-computer USB charger?
I've tried using all 4 modes of USB connection in the connectivity setting and still no go with the car charger or Belking surge protector USB ports.
It works just fine charging from the new style mini Blackberry chargers that have a USB port.
What's interesting is that when I connect to the various Blackberry chargers I have, the USB connectivity on the N8 stays at Not connected under Connectivity Manager and the phone charges but when I plug it in to a generic cigarette lighter or my Belkin surge protector USB the N8 says USB Active and the phone doesn't charge.
Seems the Belkin travel surge protector doesn't put out much current via USB according to comments on Amazon.
One of the car adapters I have looks like it's either 500ma or 1.2A based on Amazon specs. Nothing on the box to indicate what its output current is though. If it's only 500ma that won't charge an N8 I guess.

I used my N86's USB car charger for my N8 and it worked. Have you tried a Blackberry car charger?
AC chargers have pins 2 and 3 shorted together. The phone knows that it's on AC and starts charging immediately.
If those pins aren't shorted, it means that it's connected to a data port. The phone then requires some data back to see how much the USB port can handle and it'll start charging when it knows that value. Unfortunately, most generic car chargers don't send any info along pins 2 and 3.
So there are 2 issues here. Some car chargers don't short pins 2 and 3 and some phones don't care if they're shorted. It can be fixed via software, but unless Nokia alters it in Belle, the easiest way to fix this is to short pins 2 and 3 on your USB cable. My X10 on 2.1 wouldn't charge but after 2.3, it would (same hardware, example of software fix).
In the case of the N8: the N8 cares about pins 2-3 and you need a charger that will short it. It's more difficult to alter a charger but you can alter your USB cable. If you open your cable (small slit) and short wires 2 and 3 (4 total, their are tutorials online), your N8 will think it's connected to its charger and should start charging.
edit: I think Blackberry doesn't care about pins 2-3, a lot of Motorolas need 2-3 shorted... It's hard to determine since manufacturers change this answer sometimes between models of phones.

Pin 2 and 3 need to be shorted. It is not difficult to do. I was able to get a cheap one from a local chain ( Canadian Tire ) and simply take the unit apart and solder pins 2 and 3 and it worked perfectly. Even allows my Iphone to charge.
