    GSM alphabet versus unicode

The GSM alphabet allows for 160 characters, while Unicode allows for a maximum of 70. So, you must be sending the text in another language other than English for it to be shortened to 70. That's why.

I'm not sure how many the BBM format allows for a maximum.

What I mean is, if you use Unicode as the message format, it doesn't matter if you type in English or not. It still only allows 70 characters per message.

Go under Options, and find text messaging. Scroll down, and it should say '7 bit'. That's the GSM Alphabet encoding.

UCS2 is not what you want unless you need to type special characters, or languages. Stay with 7 bit.

That's a good question. If your language is set to English for the phone, and it's set for 7 bit, then I'm not sure why you cannot get 160 characters for a text message.

When you create a new text, does it say "0/ 160" or "0/ 70"?
