T-Mobile turned off EDGE on the cell site serving me

So I turned my phone to GSM only today to save some battery, and normally I'd get the 2G data icon. However, today I noticed that it only gives me GPRS. I traveled to an area a bit further away and that site gave me EDGE.

Is this something normal, or am I looking too far into it?

Would help to know where you're at. Always when stating coverage concerns like this enter your location or something. Anyway I have experienced something similar in the first mile or so of 60085 where there's only GPRS rather than EDGE in GSM only mode. Turned UMTS back on and got average to full 3G signal in the same area. Not a big issue I guess unless you're throttled because all u'll get is GPRS rather than EDGE.

It could be an upgrade to UMTS/HSPA or it could be a simple outage
LTE has arrived. The third carrier in Las Vegas with 10x10 LTE coverage

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.

I've seen it happen before. It was fixed some weeks later but you might have to report it yourself

There is no reason for grps in willowbrook. That town has had edge since the original edge upgrades many years back. (I lived in westmont so i know the area well). In my experience, it usually goes back to edge after a while. (Btw, Willowbrook already has 42Mb HSPA+, has for a while)

That's what I was thinking. I'm about to call T-Mobile just to report it to them.

It flips between EDGE and GPRS, so i'm thinking there's an issue with the tower serving me.

Danska, I live right by 63rd st and Cass ave., there shouldn't be GPRS here, right?

No, there shouldn't be gprs. I lived near that corder too, and fairview and 63rd. That tower has been an issue for many years. (The one at the water tower near thortons). I would lose 3g then lose 2g then nothing for a day. Went on for years. After a few complaints, a tech got a hold of me and said its due to the crappy data circuit they had. no clue now.

I just reported it, and they said that two others had reported the same exact issue, so i guess I'm not crazy.

Guess there was an EDGE outage, and they should have a resolution for me within 72 hours

Who cares if it's GPRS when most people have their UMTS radios on and as such they probably wouldn't notice?

I probably should do the same for the tower in 60085 but I'm only in that area for all of 5 minutes and still get 3G, so it isn't an issue for me.

Your not crazy; lots of EDGE cells around here have fallen to GPRS too. I suspect network upgrades.

There is a gprs tower in waukegan? That is beyond odd. I go through that area to get to milwaukee and that area was upgraded to edge around the same time i was in westmont. (It was the same market) Just past the border in Wisconsin might have been later. not sure. Im usually on 4g through there lately so not too sure about recently.
