Last I heard Boost was in more financial trouble than VM, and NEEDED more customers, so all the fancy new devices is to entice them. VM hasn't had problems with subscribers because of the lower rate plans (device selection & network quality is a different issue, but works for most value seekers). One other reason could be they're using all the latest devices to get people off of VM's grandfathered $25/mo plan. But they risk loosing customers to Tmobile's $30/mo plan too.
this is exactly what is happening, because i am leaving my grandfathered plan for the Tmobile plan. my sim is arriving today so i can't wait to try it out and see how it compares to the VM network. my grandfathered plan is good until march 8th, so i will have plenty of time to compare the two, but i already have a feeling that once i get a taste of 4G speeds, along with a better phone (i bought an LG G2x for $200), that i will simply drop my VM plan and never look back.
yeah i typically use between 50-100 minutes per month. if i go over a bit, it's only $0.10/min extra. i plan on keeping my number and port it to tmobile so i won't be able to sell my grandfathered plan since there is no way to port a number out of the plan without losing it...oh well, if i like the tmobile plan, i am not worried about not being able to sell my VM plan
Even @ $35 VM is a bargain for most subscribers that only use minimal voice service. Hopefully Sprint will continue to provide similar value priced service options when they launch their 4G prepaid data service on Virgin Mobile.

Operating without a contract makes you far more valuable.
i heard the rumor about VM rolling out a 4G network sometime in 2012, but that also means you have to buy a 4G compatible phone since none of the phone currently offered are 4G capable. with tmobile prepaid already offering 4G speeds AND alot of 4G phones, it was a no brainer to switch over to their $30 prepaid plan....4G speeds for your first 5gb of downloads is mind blowing....their other plans don't even offer that unless you go for their $70 unlimited everything plan so i think those of us that don't use alot of voice minutes really got an awesome option with the tmobile prepaid plan....much better than VM for those that can take advantage. plus the signal strength is WAY better on tmobile...inside my office building i am getting full bars, where vm had me at 1 bar and i would get dropped calls if i didn't lean towards the window lol i can also go into the hallway (which is surrounded in concrete block walls, and get reception with tmobile....ever attempt to get reception with vm in a situation like that? good luck with that lol
Even the 70.00 a month plan (mid 60's with online refills) is a good deal for those that need both minutes and data on T-Mobile.
Coverage however is very much an individual situation. T-Mobile sucks outside of the major cities where I am and Sprint is far superior. It's just tower placement that makes one work better than the other for some users.
